Can someone post a link on the history of the Toyota 2.7 4 cyl engine? What was the first year it was made? When did they stop making it, etc.

I feel this is one of the most reliable engines ever made and I'm curious to know the history of it. Thanks.

They didn't stop making it. The head of the engine and a few other components changed to incorporate the electronic variable valve timing, but otherwise it is the same 2.7L engine they had in the Tacoma's since either 96 or 97. It originated as the engine for the Hilux and Hilux Surf in Japan and Eastern Asian markets.

While the 3RZ and the 2TRE are two different engines, their base mechanisms and design are the same.
