Cleaning the Engine

I'm wondering, if I were to wash my engine - do I need to cover the alternator or any other vital engine parts before I spray water in there? On my other vehicles I always have but the alternator on my Tacoma is hard to reach and cover up. Any suggestions.

i keep the engine running and i cover my air box and just hose it down

A clean engine is a happy engine. Mine's due for a wash down as well.

So what is the benefit of leaving the engine on?

I just used a pressure washer and simple green on my engine and it seemed to be ok. Am i ruining my engine?

you leave the engine running incase you do get water some where its not suppose to be you can tell by the noise change in the engine
