My dad has always told me you should let the car sit for a couple hours before changing the oil? Is this true? or no?

No. You want the "gunk" in the oil suspended so it will flow out with the oil.

If you let the vehicle sit, the "gunk" will settle and won't all be flushed out with the oil.

Plus, you want the oil warm... flows better.

Interesting, but isn't the oil pretty darn hot then?

Yeah every oil shop I went to when my dad use to tell me to drive his car to a Lube place to get it change would sit there with the engine running until it hit about 180 degrees Fahrenheit before they would change the oil. Once I drove the Yukon XL to one close by after leaving it out in the cold and they just sat there with the engine on and didn't rev the engine (good thing too). It took forever before they started

Does anyone know how much that plug costs? When I removed it I forgot to put it back on, now I can't find it in my garage. Is it important to have?

Did my oil change a few days back and was wondering what's the deal with the dye in the oil?

Or that you didn't get your oil changed by toyota or you drained your trans fluid.

It's just there to catch/release that little bit of oil that comes out when one changes the filter during oil changes.
Does nothing in normal operations of driving.
    Don't worry about it.

    nothing cool
Ultimate oil change thread has been awesome. I know it's a simple project, but some of the hints are going to really help. The oil filter drain plug was my first concern when I saw the upside down oil filter. But after reading about that little plug underneath, it sounds super simple.

I just bought my truck a month ago. Alread ordered the Fumoto Valve with nipple, a case of OEM oil filters from ebay, and Mobil 1 5w-30 from Walmart. I still have 2k before the sticker says my oil needs changed, but I'm sure I'll do it earlier. Thanks OP for this thread.

Chris thanks a lot for the write up. It helped a lot.

This was my first time doing an oil change and I decided to go with the Mobil 1 5W-30 and the Mobil 1 filter. Autozone had crazy sales going on with different brands of oil. The Mobil 1 5 quart jug and the bosch filter was 29.99 but for $4 more you could upgrade to the Mobil 1 extended performance filter (valued at like $12.99). Also they had an option to add hand cleaner, a roll of blue shop towels, a small funnel, and a 7 qt drain pan for $5.

So anyways I've always taken my truck to the stealership but when they had no time I would take it to Jiffy Lube right across the street. Well back in May I was really pissed off at the service guy at Toyota dealership because he gave me an ugly look and said it would be at least 3 hours before they could get to my truck. He was a real asshole about it so I'm never going back. Alexander Toyota in Yuma sucks balls.

First thing I noticed when I went to remove the oil filter drain plug was a damn open 1 quart pennzoil bottle. The damn guys at Jiffy Lube left it and forgot to remove it! It had oil in it too. I'm lucky it didn't spill or worse get caught in any engine components such as the serpentine belt. I'm sure glad I'm gonna start doing this on my own.

One thing I learned when unscrewing the oil filter is to do it slowly. I did it way too fast and the oil just gushed out and overflowed because it wasn't able to drain fast enough. Or maybe I should have removed the drain pan plug first. Oh well it's a learning experience.

Just a thank you. I don't want to take time to look thru every oil change thread on TW but some one said to put a plastic bag over your arm when you take the filter off a 2.7. I did and it worked. First time I didn't have oil running down my arm and this is my second Taco and many many oil changes later. Thanks again for the suggestion.
