On a side note, Progessive Insurance has a volunteer program that has a similar box that plugs into your OBDII port. Supposedly if you're a "good" driver in their opinion based on the box, then you get a better rate. It was voluntary, device could be removed, and the data it submitted (by plugging it into a USB port and uploading) could be edited before submitting (remove data, not change it from what I understand). Apparently it's not very popular. Also only available in a small number of states. I can't imagine it working well in NY. Or NJ for that matter.

I've heard references to the data recorders in accident investigations and I have assumed for quite some time that most modern automobiles were equipped with them.

They say they don't use the door lock option, but all it takes is a few bad people to use it. What kind of systems do we have in place to prevent abuse? I just read an article about a network admin in Hollywood that changed the master password and locked the city out of a new multi-million dollar network. It'll cost millions to have Cisco come in and hack into the system to undo what he did. Can someone say "disgruntled On-Star employee".

Edit: The Hollywood snafu could have been avoided if they limited access to the guy when they noticed him acting "strangely", but didn't. So who's watching the people behind the On-Star and similar systems?

110% agreed, there needs to be clear-cut LAWS governing the use/abuse of the info by anyone who is not the owner. Its only a matter of time b4 on-star gets involved in a major lawsuit because it was abused. Imagine being on a major highway in the center lane and your car gets shutoff by some idiot, and you lose power. Not able to change lanes safely and fast enough you get rear-ended and somebody gets killed. Who's liable then? We'll see soon enough because its not "if" it happens but "when" it happens. Lets just hope lives aren't lost for action to be taken.

Yeah I don't really care for this option. Wouldn't you have to be aware or informed about it being in your truck? You can record people on the phone if both parties know about it, or if you are in person only one person needs to know. Wouldn't I have to be informed of this being in my truck and have the option to purchase something else. Could this be used in court if I don't know about it? Just wondering seeing as how I drive like a grandpa.

If that's the case simply unplugging or getting the software on a laptop would be enough, but then his parents might question gaps in the data. Either way, I don't see how you could remove the 5 minutes of speeding to a gf's house without them wondering why he was gone for 6 hours, but only see X minutes of data.

Best idea is for him to drive in a manner which won't upset his parents....might save his life or someone else's.

How long have you been driving? I didn't get into an accident until I hit a patch of black ice when I was 20.... You still have some time to go before you can claim a long, blemish free driving record.

im 25 and have been driving since i was 16...hadnt been in a collision until about a month ago...and even then i wasnt in my vehicle...thank goodness

however ive had speeding tickets...ive been pulled in the neighborhood of 25 times...ive been issued 5 tickets total...4 for speeding...one for the collision...

every time that a ticket caused my insurance to go up...i paid the difference...plus the cost of the ticket...

i dont go unnecessarily fast...i just get caught...none of my tickets have been for more than 15mph over...

3 of those stops i dont really "count" because after the 3rd one...we figured out the neighborhood security was targeting me...and we had him investigated by SLED (kind of like the LE Watchdog of SC...they investigate everything involving any other dept in the state)...he ended up being fired for harassment...it turned out he didnt pull over anyone that was over the age of 25...and he'd attempt to badger the kids he pulled over...searching vehicles without probable cause...threatening them with all kinds of charges etc

i suppose the little chip thing wouldnt have worked with me...because my parents knew how i drove...id tell them about each stop...explain myself etc...im not really one to drive like an insane person...and i only sped when i thought i was only a danger to myself...all of my tickets were on open highways or late night roads...and again...my speeds were always under the 15mph over line...

my license cleared this year of all citations...until this collision i was just involved in...unfortunately i was found at fault and ticketed...i rear ended someone and the circumstances surrounding it dont provide me any chance to fight it...

id rather take my 8.5 hours of DDC and my slap on the wrist and my new unmarked car than to fight a ticket for a collision that was my fault

My parents SHOULD have gotten something like that for when I was a kid. From the ages of 16 to 25 I had 16 accidents. I think I hit everyones cars in my neigbor hood. I hit our house 3 times. Once on a quad. I was a shittta driver. Now, I havent had an accident since 2001. I know....not a lot to brag about, but it is for me!

I think I have found the location of the EDR. I think its behinde the glove box on the far right side. Its a cream color. I didnt have enough light to check it out, but maybe some one else can verify.

I'm not really a conspiracy theorist and not too concerned with something recording data about my car. But I agree, my car and everything in it belongs to me, not Toyota or anyone else. Nobody can get the data from this recorder without my permission or a court order.

saw a report on CNN this morning that some insurance companies in some states are letting you volunteer to put one in your car and they cut your rates up to 60%

id do it in a heartbeat...i dont really care who knows how fast i drive for how long...if it cuts my truck insurance in half...man thatd be nice

Yeah, but it only cuts your insurance in half if you DON'T speed, get in accidents, drive recklessly, etc. So unless you drive like grandma, your rates ain't going down!
