it's nice and all to cut open filters and show what they are made of

but a real oil filter test should include hot oil under pressure and measuring the reduction of
particulates suspended in the oil. until that happens all I can say is 'yup, hmm, interesting' but
really, there is no real info on how well these actually filter moving hot motor oil.

anywho..I stick with toyota branded filters.

I did the best I could, with what I had. It's still more info than you get on the side of the box.

So I got 10 toyota filters off ebay from a seller than had around 360 ratings pretty much all positive and many many of them from the same purchase.
The issue: another member pointed out that they don't have the toyota hologram sticker on the top of the boxes so they could be fakes.
Idk for sure but would love to know thoughts on this cause I know nothing about the fakes. Here is the boxes pics and I could take many more pics after work this evening.

    Thoughts?

Just like any other ones I have bought. I spoke with the seller and he didn't know anything about the hologram sticker he was just selling a bunch of cases they have had in the warehouse for several years at the auto shop. He said I could send them back if I really was not satisfied.
Anyway these are some pics 150d3c6bb71009b06a29fc8de381612a_9bf30a0e4c3244c23a35689800a7c97034a41f71.jpge63ebe17f039d1b4bb541267cd88ea6e_fad518733c9f5c0c20b78a7baecb1714be2812c9.jpg1981ef5b176f259715873d0b9f85c50d_bff5a9a1eb0de881320b8182eef04d757cca99e7.jpg357d26267dd1c1400650aff755c2a85f_548978df1144c2c66cc3fcd9328d8c499455aaa1.jpgd52b884597f720e36640b7e9208e085d_8c97b9c43a5e9f9205195870e3a645b09167524e.jpgc8f8c6f5670e008717d15d10dab93ca7_446621e97dba1021b3a4f64018df21fb796ee5ed.jpgbe39bb07e6f8190bf4e020f9a616b19f_92af2fecb09c9a8bfb0013eb2d65366184e466b3.jpg

They look ok to me, I also bought a box from somebody on eBay some time ago, I can't remember I they had the hologram, I think I still have a couple, I'll check. I never had any issues with the ones I bought though.

That wrap looks awfully loose. The ones I have are tight, like a drum.

This link gives some tips on what to look for in counterfeit filters.

They are all pretty tight. I was messing with that one trying to look inside a bit without opening it.

It could be that his cases are so old that Toyota hadn't put the hologram stickers on their boxes yet.

If it were me, I would return them. Why take a chance on saving $10 on a case of questionable filters, and ruin a $4,000 engine?

Well, does anybody know if there is a test that can be done at home with the filter media to tell how good it is at its job? IMO id rather have less, but better media, rather than more, crappier media.

Open it and compare it with the one from the reviews around here.

Im looking more at the actual filtering media and its effectiveness, while chris has done a superb job showing us the contents, the real test is how well the media actually works.... and i was wondering if there was a test that could be done without requiring a lab and 2 or 3 million dollars worth of equipment and training.

Well, test one by using it on your next oil change. I'll check if your seller is the same as mine on ebay.
