Read there that they say u need to box the rear frame to keep it from tweaking/bending after adding a heavy steel bumper in the back. Is that really neccessary? Is that not a little over the top? I've never even read anything like that here. Thoughts anyone?

    Interesting thread link.

I would think that as long as bumper weight < rated bed capacity you'd be fine. Although, it's acting out on the end of the frame, so I guess the force would be multiplied. I wouldn't think it'd be enough to tweak the frame though.

That's armchair engineering though, and that statement has absolutely no basis in fact.

I bet Chris4x4 has something to add to this one :)

shouldnt have to box/plate it just from adding a rear bumper. but alot depends on how you use it too. if you just drive around town then no, it wont be needed. but if your always winching or towing off of it, then it probably wouldnt be such a bad idea.

Id like to know others opinons as well. We know the Tacoma is not a truck made for towing/hauling HEAVY loads. But with a around 85 pound rear bumper and a small camper or boat hooked up to it with gear in the bed, would it be to much for our trucks to handle? If so my uncle is a welder and Ill take my truck to him and have him box it in for me.:D

The offroad bumpers aren't significantly heavier than the stock with the trailer hitch. You'd be surprised how much that thing weighs.

Yea Id say together there around 60-70 for stock. Iv taken mine on and off before both the bumper and hitch. But I gotta plan for mine that SHOULD strengthen the rear frame without boxin it in. I will try any design it and see if it will work, and if it will, I will post a write up! :D
