Steering system bump stops

    Backing up a trailer today I got a bit over-zealous with my steering and cranked the wheel round to the stops. Happened a couple of times.

    I need to slow down when backing up the trailer, take my time.

    I'm wondering what damage one could do if it happened again and again and again. Are the stops inside the steering rack? Could it blow a seal in the end of the rack? Probably puts unecessary strain on the PS pump right?

    My curiosity has me asking.

    there is a spot on the spindle that is made to come in contact with the lower control arm to limit the steering. you should be ok.

    you're probably fine, I just wouldn't hit the stops too hard (im not sure what actually stops the steering).

    I know... what I really need to do is drive the trailer to a parking lot and spend some hours practicing. Slowly of course :).

    correct, turn your wheel to full lock and take a look underneath.

    look at the piece of metal (sits virticle) to the right of the disc, near the bottom. that is what comes in contact with the lower control arm

    so the only thing that would put a lot of stress on the rack would be trying to force the wheels to turn past the stops which you would have to be retarded to do.
