I just bought my wife a 2011 Tacoma 4x4. She and I loved
it. What I thought was an exhaust leak, just the injectors i
have learned, no biggie. But at 1637 KM (1000 miles) I
noticed a ticking from the left bank (V6) . This sound is
really annoying me. The dealer said it was normal. I say
it's not. It has to be a lifter and I am sure of it. I have
4 opinions (not the dealer) and they all side with me. Its
gotten louder. Cold start normal chain noise I can live with.
But the ticking doesn't start until it's been run for 20 minutes
on the road. My neighbor asked if my new truck was ok. I
asked him why. He can hear the ticking 50ft away, says
it sounds like a bad lifter. I am making the first payment
tomorrow, Jan 27th. My wifes friend is a tech at another dealer.
I am driving the 4 hours saturday so he can hear it. I build
my own racing engines for motorcycles, my 18 year old son
is following my footsteps. He thinks it sounds bad too. I told
him if he built a motor that sounded like that I'd slap him.
I am at the point I feel like letting them repo it. I am at my witts end
and don't know where to turn. IMO it's not right, anyone else
have an opinion, or similar unacceptable ticking, it sounds like
a bomb that will detonate at 100, 001 miles, as soon as the
Warrantee expires. This was my first and my last Toyota product.
BTW my wife is a Leadhand at the RAV4 Facility here in Woodstock
Ontario. She sides with me too.

Oh ya, SLUDGE. Filthy white sludge on my oil cap too. POS

We all have the tick. Maybe you should find another owner and compare before letting them repo it :p

thanks for the quick replies. Sounds like
we're getting somewhere. It better outlast
my 97 AWD Astro LUXURY TOURING, 100% serviced by me. At
    410,000 Km (240,000 miles) I'd drive it
across the country, not a leak, not a tick.
The heater quit at Christmas, my wife fixed
it herself by coming home with a new Taco.
The Astro still drives like new as I replaced upper and
lower B-Js, ties, idlers at 305 Kilometers.
I'm off to a different dealer. Thanks Woodstock
Toyota, you have cost a weekend of
snowmobiling and a days pay so far because
your "tech" don't know his butt from page 3.
Oh I can't wait for round 4, coming up soon I hope.
    They love me there;)

My wife builds Toyota's, I have faith !!!!!!

Toyota's been around for a long time and been building dependable vehicles for a long time also. If it werent for expanding family, i'd still be driving my 85' pickup that had almost 200k on it.

Im on my 3rd Tacoma (96, 08, 10) and they have all sounded the same(tick and all) and have never failed. Except this one time when i got stuck in 4 foot of mud but it was my fault ;)

I think Don's experiencing something a little louder than the standard Toyota tick. The VVT controllers on my '06 were replaced under warranty...I would assume that 5 years later they would have rectified that problem, but either way, this is an issue that the stealership is supposed to support you, not turn you away and say that it's normal.
(Unless Don's over reacting to the standard little Toyota tick sound). ;)
Either way, a second opinion is definitely in order.
PS, London is better than Woodstock. ;)

The right bank has what I would define as "Normal" ticking of the valve train.
The left side is extremely loud and can be heard from a block away as me
and my neighbor lifted the hood and did the 100 yard walk last night. The
only thing that hushed it was the freight train that crossed the iron bridge over the Grand River.

I was to go to Owen Sound last friday but instead I drove to Woodstock
saturday am (Jan 22), I spent an hour with the Service Manager. At the
time he agreed it was louder than normal. Funny how "A$$ Kissers"
can crap out their spine and turn on you. I wasted a whole weekend of prime snowmobiling in the Great White North. So Monday eve I made
arrangements to be picked up in Woodstock and left the truck so they
could hear my noise when a tech was in Tuesday. The truck must be hot and I don't think they warmed
it up enough as they heard nothing that concerned them. I picked up the
truck tuesday, I started it for the salesman, no noise other than a nice
ticking from both sides. I drove it up to Innerkip and back to the dealer
and had to force the salesman to come out and listen to the loud ticking
that wasn't there when I left. He said it was normal, get used to it, which
I never will. Most salesmen couldn't change a tire let alone diagnose
such a sophisticated engine. So tonight we're off to a dealer in Brantford
and then to London I hope friday (if I can have the day off at the cost of
a vacation day) As for my Crapstro (LOL) I kept it for my son to use
for the up coming racing season because it has been bullet proof since
I bought it new in 97. It has hauled a two up sled trailer in winter and
a 24 foot camper in summer 10's of thousands of carefree miles. A starter, an alternator
a rad and 10 sets of rotors and pads........ I didn't have the heart to take
advantage of a trade. Heck I have a mint 65 C20 with a 230 six/ Borg Warner 420 4 speed tranny with an Eaton 456 diff, you wouldn't know its running until
your within 5 feet. Anyway I value honest opinions and shrug off stabs
from those who feel they must make more noise than my Tacoma at
idle. I got an honest lead from someone in the know here, thanks. If
two other dealers tell me it's normal, I'll live with it. But if they say
there is an issue.... I will over react on Woodstock Toyota, that you
    can count on.;)

I would like to see it as well. That doesn't sound normal. I would like to hear the outcome. Keep us posted.
