Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

About 10 months ago I installed a URD short throw shifter kit and loved the result and have frequently commented on how much better the shifting feels.

However I have just broken the ball end off the stock shift lever right where it inserts into the URD kit. I have since replaced the stock stick bit now I'm paranoid that I'm going to have it fail again in the future and it may not be as convenient as in a friends driveway like this time.

Has anyone else seen this failure before? Has anyone seen it fail in stock form without the kit? The guy at URD said that this is the third one he's heard of in nine years but I'd like to know if that sounds legit. What do you think?

I'm thinking about changing it out to the TRD quick shift for peace of mind. Except the throw is only reduced 30% on the TRD kit vs 44% with URD. Has anyone compared the two that can comment on whether this feels much different?

    Wow that sucks.
I've had mine for awhile and no problems and I have never heard of this happening to anyone else either.

I would say, since you have a new shifter in there, go with it. But we will see what others have to say....

my shift stick failed (broke) last night on hwy 99.

urd shift kit, which i've loved and thought was great.
it was installed on my xrunner four years ago.

its interesting that ours both broke within days (a day)
i'm disassembling today to see the result.

    Interesting.

I think I'll be getting the TRD one. I don't want this to happen again, even if it's 4 years from now.

Keen to hear what you see inside...

Yours broke 3 times in 9 years? I've never had a shifter break. Pretty high failure rate there.

I've had mine on for like 2+ years and at least 30-35K miles with no problems. The set screws for the extender started working a hair loose so I tightened em like a year ago but never had any other problem.

3 total out of all the shirt kits sold have been reported back to URD as failing. And I would call that a ridiculously low failure rate...to the point that worrying about a URD kit failing again is silly...cause anything can fail with odds like that.

i disassembled mine and the ball was broken off the original stick.
in my opinion the added force gained by extending the length of the lever and the moving of the pivot point, was not what toyota engineered the stock stick to do. coupled with the sharp corner on the inside of the split taper that takes up the space in the urd ball extension leaves potential to shear the toyota stick ball off. i have worked in aerospace for some time so from my experience i made the decision (after taking measurements) to mill off the original taper and ball from the toyota stick. turned a piece of stock to the appropriate length turned the urd ball extension to the correct length for what i was fabricating and tig welded the urd ball (which has a tapered throat twice the diameter of the toyota ball) to the toyota stick. reinstalled and works fine. i have ordered a new toyota stick and will keep in storage under seat in case this ever happens again while away from home. the spacer plate comes out and the stock shift stick goes in.

Re: the 3 times in 9 years comments.

You are all assuming that what I was told is correct. Funny that it took 9 years to have 3 failures, and now there are another 2 in a week. I've been riding mountain bikes for a long time and it's amazing how often repectable manufacturers act like you are the first one to have a problem when you know there are 5 of your friends with the same failure. I'm not convinced that 3 (now 5) is an honest number. Others may also go unreported. I'm getting the TRD stick and someone with more faith may buy my URD kit. Few things suck more than a truck that won't move.

I'm going to say it again. Who the hell cries back to a company when their aftermarket stuff fails. If its right after install sure, if it's a few months later?

A couple per hundred.. a hundred per billion? Not many.

My ball did not break off, everything stayed intact from the URD kit but it went back to stock throw. I dissembled it and it seems that the shaft below the ball is loose from the rest of the shifter assembly.

The shifter is an assembly with a rubber isolator inbetween the ball and the shifter handle.

I installed the URD kit at 22K miles - 3 yrs ago. I now have 99K miles on my Tacoma. The shifter broke just above the URD kit - where it necks down above the ball. Does anyone know the OEM replacement part number. I plan to re-installed the URD kit on the new shifter

old thread revival but this just happened to me last night. snapped the ball clean off. I was shifting from reverse to first in a parking lot and it just went. No added pessure or anything different about my shift patterns. So glad I was not moving and the truck ended up in neutral.

shitty deal. must be from the added stress of reducing the throw of the shifter. hope it works out for everyone
