necessary to drain rear diff?

Today I went around the beach and I crossed 3 rivers, a few creeks and had a brief dip in the ocean with my '08 tacoma. I just read that if you don't put the breather extension on your rear diff that it is possible to get water in with the oil . So should I be draining my diff oil and changing it?

 

if it were me.....i would. water getting in there, especially salt water will eat them gears all to hell, and then you will have all kinds of trouble. and with that........if it was me, and this is just me, i would flush the rear diff with some cheap 80/90 and then drain that to clean it out real good, then put back in whatever you are wanting to use. better safe than sorry.

 

Me being me I'm gonna do what he would do too, I just wanted to make sure before I went through the trouble. I guess I'm doing the breather extension mod too.

good idea man........the diff breather extension will help you avoid water and crap in the diff.

Here is my question, with the breather extension would you still change you diff fluid after a few trips in some deep water? A few guys said they would change there fluid after any time in water. I was wanting to here from the wise men, I too have a lot to learn.

 

I searched but found no "how to" thread for the breather extension. Anyone know where one is?

Im not planning on going through any DEEP water but a creek or shallow part of a river is almost a definate. Will I be alright just extending the rear diff or should i do the tranny, transfercase, etc?

KoruptTaco Look in the Cheap Free mods Sticky. The part numbers are there. I just ordered mine from my local dealer like $12 bucks total I think. Takes about 20 minutes if you are messing around, I was playing with my dog.

 

luk...........with the breather extension, if done right, there isnt going to be any water getting into the diffs, especially if you have the top of the breather way up out of the way, so i wouldnt think it will be necessary to chenge as often after playing in water and mud like it would be if you didnt have the mod done.

 

Thats how I figured it but there were a few people that said even so they would change the fluid. Just curious. You have to ask the ones in the know. I have never changed my diff fluid on my vehicles after mudding in crawfish pond and rice fields and have never had any troubles. Back then I was riding in Chevy's, did'nt know if the tacoma had a problem with their diffs. sucking water.

Where exactly did you route your breather to? It doesn't say on the thread. Im guessing just as high as possible or did you route it all the way to the engine bay? Thanks for the help

 

on the rear diff....alot of people are routing the breather up thru where the fuel fill cap is..to the right of it, and some are putting them in the cubby hole in the fenderwell, and for the front diff..........anywhere in the engine bay thats up high and out of the way of moving parts will be satisfactory.

i have got to do this on my 04 very soon.

 

So its a good idea to go ahead and move the breather for the front diff also or is it ok? Like I said above, Im not going to be going through any deep water but I don't want to take any chances on filling my diff with water.

 

I am under the understanding that you don't need to move the front breather, I believe it is under the hood. But could be mistaken.

 

So I guess it would be a good idea to drain the front diff to then, and like CoruptTaco asked is it necessary to do the tranny and transfer case as well. That's kinda of a gay set up. Things like that should be done in the factory if they're gonna put an off-road sticker on it, talk about false advertising. Where I live 70% of the roads are off-road!
