Diagnose Power Window Problem

Front windows work fine. Right rear window does not work at all. Left rear window works fine from drivers seat but only goes down from the rear seat. It does not go up from the rear seat. Do I simply replace the master power window switch?

When it is doing something screwy like that (going up from one seat down in another) it is an electrical problem. Could be a blown fuse, or if you have done any mods you may have cut/spliced/crossed wires that shouldn't be. Have you done any of these?

 

I just bought it 1 month ago. It was in at least 1 accident that I am aware of so it may have been messed up as you described. The fuse looks fine. Are there multiple fuses that control the power windows? I thought there was only 1. As you can probably tell, I don't know much about this type of stuff. Thanks for your help.

 

No, only one controls it but I think if you have a short somewhere else it can cause some haywire things to happen. What do you know about the wreck, was it pretty significant repairs? To the side or sides that are having the problems? Check all of your fuses under the hood first, if everything is okay, next the dash fuse box, then start trying to follow the wires and see where they go.

 

To correct myself, there may be 2 fuses that control the windows, one under the hood and one in the dash. Usually the ones under the hood are bigger and run groups of electrical items, while the dash splits them up into individual charges.

 

Thanks so much for your help. I will check all of the fuses and let you know. The wreck was supposedly not too bad. It was to the right rear quarter-panel. This is the side where the window does not work at all.

 

There is a fuse for each window and they all are good. Not sure where to go from here.

 

The window switch on the left rear door is bad. It's not the master switch because the master switch works for that window. For the same reason, it can't be the wiring from the master switch to the door switch, nor the LR window motor. It can't be the wiring from + 12 VDC to the left rear switch because the left rear door switch can lower the window.

The right rear is more difficult. Follow these steps in order until you fix it:

Check the P RR P/W fuse again.

Open up the RR door and make sure that the window motor and the window switch are plugged in.

Replace the RR window switch with the new one that you bought for the LR. See if that fixes the problem. If it does, the RR switch is bad. If not, continue.

Check for +12 VDC on the white wire of the RR door switch. If there, it's not the problem. If not, wiring between the P RR P/W fuse and RR door switch is bad.

Unplug the plug from the RR window motor. Measure the voltage between the two terminals on the plug while you push DOWN on the door switch. If 12 VDC, the motor is bad. If not, the problem is the master switch, the wiring between the master switch and the door switch, or the wiring between the door switch and the motor.

I have the same problem with one of my rear windows.

 

Thanks Ben. I believe I need 2 new switches. The switch that partially worked did the same on the other side after being switched.

 

Can anybody recommend where to buy these switches? The dealer wants $60 a piece and I can't seem to find them online anywhere for any less.

 

My right rear window had some problems too. The window work sometimes and then wouldn't. It would go down but not up. This is how i fixed it. 5 min fix.
1.Pull the switch out of the door panel
2. Take off the E-clip and pull pin out.
3. Find something to pry/remove the bottom(white) plate of the switch. (its the plate that the connector plugs into)
4.pull out white square rocker in switch housing.(white plastic piece not the 2 metal ones)
5. make sure the two knobs at the bottom of the rocker are the same length.
If they are not, sand the longest one down to the same length.
It they are the same length check your contacts for burn marks.
6. Reassemble in reverse order.

this fix worked. Took me less than 30 min to complete both back windows. also noticed burn marks on the contacts so I scraped it off and wiped with alcohol swab. Windows work like new, thanks Ludo!

 

I was just about to bump this thread... this seems to be a common issue with no pictures or detailed information on how to fix these damn things on this forum anywhere. So BUMP again for some pictures. I'd like to be able to fix these things and not have to spend $40+ buying new switches.
