Tacoma or Frontier - VSC

Hi,

I am looking to get either a Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier and would like to ask a few questions of those on this site. I would like to get an access cab 4x4, v6, standard with VSC. Toyota doesn't carry VSC (on Tacomas) in this 7 state region so I would need to order the Tacoma and would get it in 3-4 months.

1) Did any of you have a Nissan before getting your Tacoma and if so - why did you switch?
2) Does your Tacoma have VSC?
3) Did you special order your Tacoma?
4) Any advice? I will have to drive the Tacoma to work in the city during the week and will be driving off-road about 5-10 times a year (up to 2 weeks each time). Rain and flooding is a problem here in Houston.

well for off road purposes the Tacoma sits higher than the frontier. and it think comes stock with bigger tires. and just looks a hell of alot better than the Nissan. my boss just bought an 07 crew cab v6 4x4 frontier and i'm not impressed at all. It seem to drag ass in power and sits real low for a 4x4. I told him i'll bet him a case of beer my stock 99 2.7 4x4 spanks that ass on the trail!

I'll try to provide a little input, though please not the views are only my opinions.

1. Are you certain that VSC is even an option in any region with a standard (I assume you were meaning transmission), I thought it required the automatic?

2. Before I bought my 04 tacoma I looked at the 04 frontiers, my observences... The Nissan's gearbox seemed sloppy, not crisp shifting and positive engagement like the Toyota's, The fit and finish of the Nissan seemed to pale in comparison to the Toyota, with respect to door gaps, and interior cabin noise, and mostly the Nissan v6 then with a manual could only tow 3500 lbs same as the toyota 4 2.7 4 cyl. And remember also that in 04 you would have needed a massive brush guard to hid the ugly front end. I do not know if any of these things still hold true as I did not even look at the nissan this year when I bought my new truck.

3. I did order my truck, though I ordered it within the general specs of my region, so I was only about 5 weeks waiting for it.

4. I have not gotten the new truck dirty yet, but I really put the 04 through it's paces off-road, and in flooded conditions at the Jersey shore one summer, water to the door sills, and she performed flawlessly.

In looking at 07' Frontier and 07' Tacoma AccessCabs, I noticed two very large differences in the cab itself.

Tacoma Advantage: The Tacoma has a much larger AccessCab. My wife's stipulation on me getting a truck - it has to be able to support two adults AND a baby seat (should we pull an "oops").

Frontier Advantage: The Frontier's rear "suicide doors" on the extended cab open beyond 100 degrees. It almost folds flat against the bed of the truck. There have been one or two times I wish I had that, but I didn't like anything else about the Frontiers...
