Talking Backing up in 4x4 question: are the wheels suppose to lock?

Howdy,

In 4x4, when you back up and you turn your wheels to back into the parking spot, the back wheels locked up and stayed lock until I drove forward. Is this normal?

Key points: on pavement, just trying it out

06 tacoma quad cab

Any feed back would be great before I take it to the dealer.

Thank you

Before i attempt to answer your question i have a few for you
1. how hard were you "turning" 35degrees, full lock of the steering wheel?
2. by "lock" i assume the tires stops rotating therefore the truck would no longer move
3. did it seem to "buck" or "jump"

Are you sure it was the REAR that locked up?

I'm willing to bet it was the front-end binding up.

You really shouldn't be driving on the pavement in 4WD. And especially - you shouldn't be on the pavement making turns in 4WD.

You're CV joints up front are under way too much stress and can't move when turned at extreme angles. So - they tend to bind up preventing the truck from moving.

When you're experiencing this 'binding' - DO NOT FORCE IT (or something could break).

Wow, when I went to driving school I got some generic sedan that I don't even remember. You've got some lucky students.

Do you mean like the rear diff is locking when going in reverse and then disengaging when going forward?
a buddy of mine had a jeep cheroke that did that, made for good burnouts

Hi....... I had to turn it quite a bit then it seem to lock and jump... I guess it's the 4x4. What happened is my instructor must of hit the 4x4 and did not realise it......... it works fine today... put on almost 300 kms and some in reverse.

I will try it again but this time on grass......or MUD!!

Thanks again!
