actually there was this one guy who was using it as an air intake. it was crazy looking. But i was thinking maybe if you were to open it would it let more hot air out? which could possibly add more pull form your cai? just a thought

I had an aftermarket vented hood scoop on my old corolla. The company obviously stated it added gains by releasing the hot air from the engine. I'd say it worked, maybe not in terms of gaining HP or TQ...but if you put your hand over the vents you could feel how much more hot air was billowing out.

As far as making it functional you would have to devise some custom air intake system to hook up to a hole you'd have to cut into the hood. Space wise I don't know how easy this would be to create, but then again I'm not sitting starring at the engine bay or know the clearance dimensions of the hood scoop. In essence, I suppose it would make a CAI system that ran from the top of the engine rather then the bottom...but being that the hot air would indeed rise I think any potential gains would be negated by this fact. Probably not worth the time/money investment for this project.

The hood scoop is just there to look pretty, you can open it up but there are no real benefit to doing so. I left the one on my old X-Runner alone.
