Is the FUEL PUMP or something else??

95 Toyota Tacoma, with 269,600 miles.

My truck has seemed to run fine the last few days besides when i start it, it acted like it was taking about 2 seconds longer to start, i was thinking it was my battery, but now it wont start unless i turn the key over and back on a few times, then it will just start fine. The last few months it has been spitting and spuddering once or twice a week then it will run fine for a few months...so it hasn't done that in awhile. It also will die down if i gun it real hard...and has hardly any power going up a hill or something. So im not sure if all of these are signs of the fuel pump or just my motor being tired??

I assume you have changed/checked the air filter recently?

 

I have a K&N air filter/system that i clean regularly...

 

So its the oiled one? Check/clean your mass air flow sensor. If you over oil the filter and get oil on the sensor it will cause many problems

 

Yeah its the oiled one, but its been on there for atleast 2 years that i know of...never had sa problem with it.

 

But if you clean it regularly, don't you have to oil it each time? Maybe there is oil build up on the MAF?

 

^Exactly. It can slowly buil up or if you oiled too much one time it will get on the MAF

 

Ok i cleaned it and nothings changed. I can get it to start just fine when i turn the key on and off 3 times and then start it.

 

We ruled the MAF sensor out because the hubby unplugged it and i couldnt get it to start at all, he plugged it in as i was turning it over and it started..

 

When was the timing belt and idler last changed?

 

Good question. I've only owned the truck since March. ...but i can ask the previous owner with no problem. But in my luck... if its anything like the shocks, and ball joints, they're probably factory.

 

Clogged Fuel Filter maybe.

should be under the hood, driver side, by the intake manifold, right underneath it.

you shouldnt be able to see in it, you should replace it anyways

 

Sounds likely, especially since they are hard to get at and it' possible it's been in there for 260K miles

 

Im betting on the fuel filter as well.

 

It would explain why i call it a TURD... its soo slow, if i dont punch on it and let off at the right time it was hit the rev limiter or die down until i let off the accelerator :/

When i bought the truck in March i think i should have gone for better quality than the looks of it. I got ripped off

My 98 Tacoma had the fuel filter basically beneath the drivers feet, if it is not in engine compartment. Mine was a metal can. Replacing it is a good place to start anyway and cheapest. I would squirt the conections with something like PB Blaster just in case it is the original, you do not want to twist a fuel line. Put the timing belt on a to-do list.

 

what engine did your 98 have in it? i have the 2.7 and thats where it was for me. a black metal can as well.
