Hi guys. I just noticed a couple of windshield nicks about the size of the tip of a ball point pen. Can this be repaired or should i leave it be. I know there are a lot of opinions online about this. It really is a very small nick. Some glass people say nicks like this are too small to repair. Any thoughts?

I've got 4 decent sized ones, about the size of the head of a pen and haven't done anything about them. They're not in bad spots and none have shown any tendency to spider out. If they look like they're getting bigger, then fix it. Tiny knicks I don't even worry about.

I put a dot of superglue on them....have done it on two diff. Windshields. They didn't spider.

One of those was 2 weeks ago on my brand spankin new Tacoma. Damn it.

The other was my Subaru. Lasted 2 years til I traded for my Toyota. Couldnt even tell after....and we had record snow last year so the cold didn't affect it at all.

    Or a new windshield.....

I'm with Pugga ... gotta a couple now that I can't even remember how long since I got them/noticed them. Tiny (pin head) ones I leave alone. I work nights, truck sits outside at night and in my garage during the day. We're getting sub zero overnight regularly this winter, keep my garage between 50 and 60 F. No spider out yet!. FWIW. :)

Never done the super glue thing....hmmmm.

Been thinkin' on this one .... most insurance companies these days cover chip repair for free. I know mine does (USAA). If it's bothering you, maybe go ahead and call it in for repair ... worst case the glass guy comes out and says it doesn't need repair ... but then you know for sure. That's assuming your insurance (comprehensive) covers free chip repair. Just a thought FWIW!

Please check your policy on this shit. Sure, it's free until you renew your insurance and they say you have 4 claims and want to raise your rates. That's what happened to us in TX with our glass policy on top of having comrehensive and all the rest of full coverage shit. Fuck that, go spend 10.00 at the auto parts for the glass chip repair kit. I have fixed a few with them and they haven't spread. I'm not talking about a pin head thing either, nice chip that will spread left unattended about the size of the end of a magic marker. Do it yourself or just pay the 20-30.00 for the repair guy to do it, the ones with the tents in parking lots. The same ones who charge the ins co. 70.00 for the same repair when it's "free" to you. I will never claim any glass related anything other than having them just replace the whole fucking windshield. That one claim is the same as you having a chip repaired so the hell with trying to keep them from having to do that by making several claims on chips to save your windshield. Just like always, nothing is really free, there is always a cost. It only gets put off or passed on to others.

    I agree with this

I had my windshield chipped by a dump truck throwing a rock out of his bed after a couple months of owning my truck. I called Allstate and I got it repaired for free. My rates never went up because of it and that was over 2 years ago. Maybe insurance companies in some states have more freedom to bend their customers over more and use less lube than other states, I don't know.

 Dude that sucks ... sorry :(
That's been my experience as well; I've been with USAA since they opened up to enlisted when I was overseas in 1996 or 97 ... and over the 10 years I've been in Alaska, I've probably had at least 6-8 chip repairs done over 4 or 5 different vehicles. Never had a problem or rate increase ... unless they snuck it in somewhere. They might have gotten it pass me ... but I seriously doubt they snuck it pass my wife. ;)
