Service?

Ok guys. Don't drop me from the forum after this.

2003 Tac Dbl cab 4wd 3.4v6
Bought Aug '07 with 64k
Currently (Mar '12) 168k

The only service that has been done on the truck has been reg oil changes, air filters, brakes, tires, etc. I BELIEVE the previous owner had the 60k mile service performed because they said the bill was about $500-$600. I have had NO problems until recently when it feels as though I have a plug fouling (hesitation when under a load) but the "check engine" light doesn't come on.

What service items do I need to have done in order to get "caught up" and how much is a reasonable amount to pay?

If you havent' already done so, you should check out the Toyota Owner's Site, from which you can download Manuals & Maintenance Guides, and check for outstanding Recalls & Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) on your truck. (Yours should be similar to the one that's attached here.)

In the meantime, I recommend checking/changing:
- Timing Belt (and water pump)
- Spark plugs
- Lube all drive shaft zerks
- Transmission, Differential, and Transfer Case oil
- Coolant
- Fuel filter
- Brakes (bleed/replace, as appropriate)
- Clutch (bleed)

Cost will depend on how much you're willing/able to do and where you buy the parts.

 

Buckaroo, I agree with everrything Norton has suggested. I expect spark plugs and fuel filter should be at the head of the list, then go completely through the list if it has not been done.

Yes, I expect the wires and coil packs are overdue as well. I changed my coils and wires on my 98 every other sparkplug change(2X25,000=50,000 miles). Maybe they did not need to be changed then, but I never had a problem with rough running or hard starts in 250,000 miles. Even at 20 degrees below zero.

 

I had a 1997 3.4l. I would suggest buying a timing belt kit which has a water pump timing belt some pulleys new belts and thermostat. If you pay a garage to the timing belt there will not be much more labor to replace the rest (water pump) as they are already in the front of the engine. The 3.4 is noninterference engine so no big deal if the timing belt breaks but you will be stuck along side the road. I bought a kit off ebay that had OEM part. Mitsubihi timing belt asain water pump ans such.
