Timing chain replacement...

    I'm sure this has been brought up before but bear with me. At what milage are you suppose to change the timing belt / water pump on the 2nd gens. I have 76k and my maintenance light came on. Oil is good and fluids are squared away.

    How do I get that damn thing off! :mad:

    Maintanence light is the oil change interval light @ 5,000 miles. To reset it press the odometer button(make sure it is on the odometer & not the trip) & hold, put the key in and turn till the light check comes up(do not start truck). While still holding the odometer button, you will see the odometer flash and dotted lines counting down. Once they have counted down you can let go & the oil change indicator is reset to zero.

    2005 & newer is a timing chain: There are no prescribed replacement intervals; these components should be replaced as needed.

    I was old the 1gr-fe was engineered to have a 250,000 mile life before any "major" work needs to be performed, i.e. timing chain replacement.

    Going to resurrect this thread. I have 112K miles on my 2011 Tacoma and the shops keep telling me I need a new timing chain. They say it's not an emergency but Toyota's recommended replacement interval is 100K miles, so I should get it done sooner rather than later. And here I'm reading this thread and seeing people who didn't replace the timing chain until over 200K miles.

    Opinions? Is this just Toyota trying to sell some extra timing chains?

    Snugtop cab high canopy.
    With proper lubrication a timing chain should last the life of the engine. I've never seen a timing chain wear out and reused the original timing chain when I rebuilt a 22R. No problems.

    If your truck is running like it always has for the last 112K miles, and isn't making any new strange noises, they're probably trying to take advantage of you. There is no recommended replacement interval for timing chains like there is with timing belts. When in doubt, ask TacomaWorld first!

    Unfortunately many dealers and shops believe the ladies know nothing about cars and try to capitalize on that. Several "reputable" dealerships and shops have treated my single mother-in-law much differently by herself vs. going in with me. She told me it has been so widespread she won't go to a dealership or tire shop by herself again.

    I told them not do the timing chain work today because it sounded a little bit off from what I thought. I have a friend who is a mechanic at the local Toyota dealership and I asked him as well. He told me the same thing I see here: the work isn't needed unless there's rattling coming from the engine. So... I guess there are two shops I won't be taking my truck to again. :mad:

    The other things they're fixing today I can hear the parts rattling around and I know they need to be fixed (a worn u-joint, and I could see very easily that I needed new brake shoes). I don't know a huge amount about the mechanics of my truck, but I'm not a complete idiot. I hate shops like that.
