    Wrecking yard?

Or pull the third and carry it to a specialty shop and have them rebuild it?

Both option MUCH cheaper than dealer repair.

Chase at ECGS is good no doubt. But it's good to support local shops when you can.

If you're in a major urban area, you should be able to find a good local shop and avoid having to ship a 75lb 3rd member around the country.

Differential repair is skilled labor with a specialized skill set, but it's not like brain surgery where you want to seek out the nation's top neurosurgeon.

Now, if you live in East Podunk, and your only choice for miles around is "Bob's All Purpose Shade Tree Repair - If it Rolls Creeps Or Crawls, we can Fix It (I Think)" - then yeah, shipping the third to a known specialty shop makes sense.

    My two cents.

Totally agree with you. Since he was asking I assumed he's exhausted local options.

    CSB:
My 6.0 diesel blew head gaskets awhile back. Lots of searching turned up a reputable shop relatively local that had done lots of high-profile work. Flash and fancy. They did a good job on the rebuild but the new gaskets failed in 25k miles. (Black Onyx head gaskets are terrible, as it turns out)

In that time I had moved farther away from that shop and did some searching closer to home. Stumbled on a shop with a single lift and 2 owner/employees. Gave them a call and they're experts on the specific engine I was having issues with, could name exactly the symptoms I was seeing, and explained how and why things failed after my last rebuild. Took my truck to them and got it back 5 days later, completely rebuilt (cab-off procedure) and running better than it ever has.

It's the kind of shop that you'd miss if you were staring right at it, but I'd happily bring any of my vehicles to them in the future. Quality work and the best prices I've found.
    /CSB

OP, good luck with the repairs!
