Reset check engine light

Reset check engine light

My check engine light came on over the weekend and ran up to a local Advance Auto to find out that it appears to be an O2 sensor (system running too lean) issue. When I asked the guy to reset my check engine light, he told me that as of January of 2012, they were no longer allowed to reset the light.
I do not personally have a OBDII scanner; is there a way that I can get this irritating light to cut off without having to purchase a scanner? It seems I heard somewhere that you can pull the power off of the battery over night and this will shut it off (I have not tried that yet) but was wondering if there was any other way around having to purchase a scanner...

Oh, and I have a 2000 Tacoma V6

With the 2nd Gens I believe if you disconnect the battery for 20 minutes the system resets itself. Might work for a 1st Gen also. Either way, it's worth a shot over buying a scanner!

I'm not sure if something like a Scangauge or Ultragauge could reset if for you. I know they can read codes, not sure if they'll reset them.

That did the trick....20 minutes and no check engine light! SWEET! Now I believe my trucks computer is going through an adjustment phase sense it is idling rough—but no pesky check engine light!

Yup... Itll take some time for your truck to acclimate to your TB. If your idle is low you might want to consider cleaning the TB and MAF

Recently cleaned my MAF, TB and ISCV. As soon as I re connected the battery and cranked it up it up, it seemed to want to shut down from the rough idling (which I am sure this is a result of the computer re calibrating).
I have had random rough idling issues in the past, "random" being the key word. In order to diagnose the problem I have cleaned the three items mentioned above and had all six fuel injectors professionally cleaned (by WitchHunter Performance). and It still seems to randomly idle rough. I have zeroed it down to two sources: one being electrical, which I will replace the spark plugs and wires—Hoping that it is not one of the coils. The second would be a vacuum leak which means I have to somehow find the one dry rotted hose or hoses that could be the culprit...

Any update on this OP?

Shouldnt be hard to find a bad hose by visual inspection.

Test your wires and coilpacks.

Wires and coils seem to be working fine which means it is a bad vacuum hose. The easiest way to find a leak in the vacuum system, other than visually inspecting the hoses, is to pull the vacuum hose from the air cleaner box and get someone whom smokes to blow smoke while the motor is running at normal operating temps.... The problem is that I don't smoke and I don't know anybody that does...
But they all visually look fine...some are ever so slightly dry rotted but nothing too horrible for a 12 year old truck...

Maybe I should take up smoking...

nice tip wil have to try. Just replaced my spark plugs on my 2nd gen taco. The next day the light was on, So def will try this tip if not have to check the light Thanks
