Both reverse lights out

Not sure how long they've been out but noticed last night.

Checked continuity on the following and all seem to be okay: bulbs and connections, 15 fuse, switch on transmission (no continuity when free, continuity when pushed per FSM).

What else can this be?

 

Tony, since you checked for continuity at the switch and the fuze. the next area to check is the sockets in the rear. Use your meter and see if you have power going to the sockets with the truck in reverse. You know not to start it up,but turn the key to ON and put the truck into reverse with the emergency brake applied. If you have power going to the rear, then you have a ground wire problem. If you don't show power coming to the rear then you have a broken wire somewhere from the dash to the tail gate area. Good Luck.

 

Checking sockets for continuity or for voltage? Im obviously a newb... Just learning electrical as we speak

 

Edit: I am watching tutorials on multimeters and how electricity works. I'll come back when I have clear questions.

 

Update: The reverse lights turned back on randomly right after I originally posted this but now lights are intermittent.

I can now tell that it has to somehow do with the transmission. Is there a switch in the reverse slot? Sometimes I can jiggle it or move it halfway into reverse and the lights turn on. Any ideas on how to fix this?

 

Intermittent lights could indicate poor contact between the bulbs and the sockets. Clean the bulbs and sockets using an abrasive to remove all oxides, apply dielectric grease liberally, reinsert bulbs.

Also make sure that any springs or springy contacts aren't bent/worn and actually apply adequate force against the bulb to make proper contact.

Hope this simple solution works for you. If not, you'll have to inspect wiring and relays.

 

Thanks guys! I didn't get a notification you replied but I got it fixed for now.

I removed the switch, tested continuity... still good. Noticed all parts were dirty so I sprayed the switch and connectors with MAF cleaner. Reinstalled and works again! If it starts acting up, I'll get a new switch. Dealer quoted me $28 for a new one.
