SRS warning light

The SRS warning light stays on. Is this something a do-it-yourselfer can take care of or do I really need to take this to a dealer?

 

airbags pack a hell of a punch. I would be weary of doing anything resulting in those going off at the wrong moment.

If you haven't gotten a recall notice, one should be on it's way. Regardless, I would take it back to Toyota and let them deal with it. If it's the clockspring cable, it should be covered under this recall.

 

Get the code read to make sure you are not caught paying dealer diagnostic fees. Autozone reads them for free.

If you need to ask if it is something you can do yourself I would highly advise against it. Airbag deployment can kill you. Take it to the dealer if its not covered under warranty it will cost you about 1 hour labour for diag plus parts and labour. That is a hell of a lot cheaper then hospital bills and replacing all airbags in the vehicle. I have seen a master Toyota tech screw up once with srs he left the shop in an ambulance and it cost over $8,000 to replaces the airbags in a 4runner

 

Unplug battery. Wait 15 min. Get no static or power even remotely close to the air bag connections. Game on.

 

And when the code is for driver side open circuit you have the training and tools to hook the battery back up and figure out if it's the airbag, clock spring, wiring or module? yes there is a good chance it is the clock spring but airbags are also fairly common. If do yo decide to tackle this DO NOT attempt to check resistance with a dvom!
