Scangauge???

Hi all...

I am looking for a device that can read trouble codes and erase them. It seems like everyone on this site goes with the scangauge II. While it looks like a pretty nifty gadget, what are the benefits of getting one of those (for $150+) instead of getting something like this (for $40)....

http://cgi.ebay.com/U480-UNIVERSAL-C...3A1%7C294%3A50

it looks like it should work with my 02 taco.

i'm leaning towards the universal reader on ebay... anything i'm missing here????

well if you just want the codes, the cheap reader is fine. the scanguage gives you lots of other info and you can leave it connected all the time. odb II is the term for the onboard diagnostic standard. i believe most vehicles after 1995 have the same connector

All cars 96 and above are OBDII which means on board diagnostics and II being the second edition

the obd11 port is the port you read coads through it connests to your ecu and lets the reader talk to the onboard comp. with the scangauge it just plugs into the obd11 and thats all you to it...

Arrow OBD-II Information

Everything you need to know about OBD-II systems... This is a very good run down in my opinion.

OBD-III isnt too far over the horizon either, maybe another 4 to 6 years down the road and it should be implemented. Hopefully it will allow us to stop calling that annoying little check engine light the 'idiot light'.
