Cleaning the MAF sensor, found oil in intake

I just recently got a scan done to see why I was getting the CEL. Code was 171 - Mass Airflow Sensor. I popped open the intake hose and found quite a bit of oil pooled up in the MAF housing. I cleaned all that up, but I believe that the oil is coming from the vent tube that connects to the intake just before the throttle body and the rear of the driver's side valve cover. I couldn't quite tell, but is there a PCV at the valve cover? This is the only culprit that I can see that would be spewing oil inside the intake. I have also thought about re-routing said vent line into the bottom of one of the intake resonators to help catch excess oil. Any thoughts?

Oil from the PVC. Oil vapor is condensing in the intake. Excessive oil is a sign of worn rings.
If you have a supercharger, you need a catch can on the PCV line.

 

So there IS a PCV connected to that line? I don have a SC, but it sounds like I may need to use that resonator as a catch can.

Compression test or leakdown test will tell you if there is a problem. If you have the tools, a leakdown test is the better option.

Hi Jake, I don't know how many miles you have on your Taco and how long it has been since the PCV valve has been changed, but you may want to change it out. You will want to buy the dealer PCV valve and get the Rubber grommet that the PCV sets in on the valve cover. You may be losing vacuum around the PCV and that along with it not working is dumping the oil in to your intake. I hope this helps, Good Luck.

 

It's got 166K. I just ordered a new PCV and grommet. Cleaning off the MAF Sensor really helped a lot with the performance of the engine. No more dead spots, hesitating and clatter from the engine now. Pulls nice and smooth!
