Lubrications Don't do this!!!

Hey Guys,

Ever wonder why the factory requires us to use certain lubrications for our trucks? I have in the past. I'm no chemist and don't want to be so instead of trying to buck the system I've always just used exactly what they tell me to use and quite frankly, have never had an issue based on factory type lubrication for my vehicles.

That brings me to this issue.

I did a conversion from the standard 2nd gen Tacoma t case to an FJ Case and took the Tacoma case as a core. There are parts that I can use if the case is any good and most of the time they are just fine. This case however, had some additives put into the t case fluid that was supposed to "help" with longevity of the case. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Below is a picture of the oil pickup from a Tacoma case with 190,000 miles on it. This was a picture taken just as I took the case apart and before I cleaned the pickup screen. Other than some of the sealant stuck to it it's pretty clean.



This next picture is of a pickup screen from the other t case that had the additive in the fluid. As you can see this pickup is all but plugged up and this case was very close to an early death from oil starvation.



Here are other pictures that show that this additive left a very sticky and gooey film all over everything in this case. There is nothing I can use from this case at all. The time and money it would take me to clean it all wouldn't be worth it.

This stuff was so sticky, that the dreaded keys that always fall out if you don't know what your doing had to be pried out. Most of the time they just fall out on their own. In this picture you can see the keys just sitting there. Normally they would be on my bench at this moment.


Additives, or factory type oil with regular change intervals. You be the judge and let your decision be the jury.

Yeah, there is a reason for their madness at times and when it comes to the factory recommendations on fluids, I've never been screwed by following them.

Wonder what the additive was intended to do. If it was advertised to stops leaks, I guess the gooey deposit is probably expected.

You'll be fine with that. Just make sure it's the specified viscousity. 75/90 or 80/90 nothing else.

Agreed, I think the OP is making a point on using the correct type of lubrication, not so much brand.

 

well he did mention he's been using only OEM lube's. So just had me wondering if the other brands may have adverse affects.
