Hi everyone, i am having an issue thats driving me insane! i need some help..
so my diff was leaking oil out of the driver side of the diff where the axle goes into, so i took the axle out and put in a new seal, that fixed that issue. drove the truck from my back yard to the front, then the next day im leaking oil from the passenger side! so im like damit! took it apart, put in a new seal, leaks everywhere. so im thinking maybe i put the seal in wrong? took it apart and put another one in. put it back together and it was a very very slow leak, like 5ish drops every 24 hours.

took it for a test drive around the block, parked it in front of my house, and BAM here comes all the oil! it was pretty much pouring out.... any ideas? it didnt do it before i did my driver side and i didnt even really drive on it?.....

    Thanks in Advance.

Nothing, it just pops in then there is a little metal piece that coveres it that slides onto the axle shaft

No retainer ring, not pressed in?!?!

    Does this help at all:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/49008-front-diff-leaking-oil-seal-confusion.html

I searched 'oil seal' and there are quite a few 1st Gen threads where people had the same issue you're having. Unfortunately, none of them posted back with the solution or they just took it to the stealership.

Oh it is pressed in, I had a chisel and I tapped it around the hard part of the seal with a hammer untill I felt it seat in.

okay so i have my hands on a FSM for my truck.
so it says oil seal drive in depth (4.5mm) which is .177 inches. that obviously cant be how far in it goes cause the seal is thicker than that.... is that measurement coming from after the seal is seatted in, how much of a lip is sticking out from the seal on the diff?

    does that make sence?

It should be countersunk 4.5mm.... From outside edge of the recess for seal to the seal should be 4.5mm

okay so let me make sure i got this right.... the seal actually shouldnt go all the way into the diff, it needs to be sticking out 4.5mm?

i thought it wasnt supposed to be flush.....
