So i had a slight squeek when starting up in the mornings from the belt so i used some spray belt cleaner called "belt dressing"

after sprayed on i started my truck and the belt squealed very loud and didnt stop at all. i fugured there were to much spray so i let it run for 15 min with no let up on the noise. then drove it a good 25 miles and still very loud.

    What could it be?

Worn tensioner? Misaligned power steering pump? Have you checked the belt tension?

belt dressing is a band aid... just replace the serpentine belt

I ended up smoking a belt with the spray-on belt dressing on my '69 Camaro.

1969, now that was a year for muscle cars. I had a 1969 SS Chevelle, 396/375hp. Factory chambered exhaust, great car.

Belt dressing is for masking the problem. I recommend fixing the problem. Why is the belt squeeling? Stretched so the tensioner is maxed out and isn't tightening it enough? Is it an idler pulley causing the noise?

Definitely find the issue, and throw that belt dressing in the trash!

Yup... Last year of the 1st Gen Camaro... awesome car, despite the problem with compression oversteer. IMHO, that was the only thing that improved with the '70 redesign.

    Ditto.

Bad tensioner, aged belt, or one of the driven devices is running "tight".

    Never spray anything on belts.

If they squeel, you need to check/tighten the belt. If that doesn't work, take the belts off and check for bad bearings.

Was it cleaner or belt dressing? Two totally different things.
Where I work, cans that are labeled as belt dressing are a nasty sticky material that will gum up everything. Cleaners should evaporate ( like Brakleen).

What the hell is belt dressing meant to do anyway, to make the belts shiny?

If belts are squealing, it is indicating there is a problem weather it be a stretched belt or a worn tensioner, in either case you need to properly identify and correct the issue.

Tension was good. i only have 28k miles on the truck i don't feel like i should need a belt yet.

There was only a small squeek that i could hear at idle sometimes so my uncle tossed me a can of "belt dressing". (which made it squeal constantly.)

I'm thinking maybe i just put to much on or something because later i put a little water on the belt and it stopped instantly. Came back after another few miles of driving but not as bad. put a few more drops of water and haven't herd the sound since. 100+ miles.

    Only 28k, but it's a 2007.

Age has more of an impact on belt life than mileage.

Bought it from my grandfather who babied it for 5 years at 22k :headbang:

Do you think the belt it worth replacing than? Not really any signs of wear that i can see.

If you replace your belt, get a Good Year Gatorback. They are by far the best belts I have seen, and not heard.

For a $40.00 investment why take a chance with a five year old belt.

Is it possible that it could be an idler pulley? Mine was making a chirping sound before I had to replace it, which at first I thought was the belt. Only really heard it while the truck idled though.

That is the belt I prefer. Goodyear and Gates make some of the better belts IMHO.

If you put water on the belt and the squeak stopped you need a new belt.
