more like the sound that comes from the engine when you shut off ( cooling down sound ) also what surprises me is that the temp never went up. Because first thing i looked at was the temp and that was not even above the normal.

Waiting and dragging feet only makes things worse. Take it to dealer and explain what happened. Then take it from there.

You ran your engine low on oil. When oil light comes on, it means that there is VERY LITTLE OIL in the engine.

Most likely you spun a bearing or bent a rod. You will need new engine or a rebuilt your current one.

Your radiator and cooling system still works, right?

    Well there ya go. :)

If you have pics of the mess inside I think that would help your cause. You don't want them to blame you for "forgetting to put in oil when you changed it".

    Not sure about sound.
Cooling system on newer engines is slightly different. First that temp guage sucks it will not show overheating until you are way way above.
Second, oil is what transfers heat from all components to cooling system because it flows similar path to cooling system. So with out oil you would have to run your engine to a seizing point to see blimp on the temp gauge.
What oil you had there ?
Some oils are better to protect engine. Mobil 1 0w-40 saved my TDI engine after oil line blew. But its Turbo Diesel rated and its made to survive harsh temperatures. Also TDI engine I had was forged iron block.

EDIT: This is why runnign best oil in engine is good insurance policy. One day when things go wrong it will give protection. On the side note, another chuck to doing own oil changes because dealer kids are horrible.

I tend to think this is going to end with major engine work due to oil starvation. It's the dealer's fault if they changed the oil. Problem is, since you tightened the loose filter and added oil, the evidence may be gone. I think the ideal way to deal with this would have been to call a tow truck, have it towed to a different dealership, and play dumb. Then they would document in writing what happened, and you would have what you needed for small claims court, if it comes to that.

    Good luck to you.:(

like i said im not sure what oil it has or had in this case in it because i bought the truck back in August and since then the oil had not been changed. I know it was coming up and it just recently hit 75k and i was going to get it changed. The spilled oil wasnt very dark or dirty at all. The truck has always driven really nice and no problems until now. When i bought the truck, i bought extended waranty with it through a third party. Im just not sure if they will cover any of this since this is not a mechanical breakdwon. Out of curisoity, if this is not covered by waranty, is this somehting my auto insurance would cover? i will get the truck towed to the dealer and let them see what the damage is and whose pocket it will hurt.

hey btw when we change our own oil, there is no paper work on it and also we are not certified. If there is engine break down down the line for whatever reason, wouldnt the waranty people or dealer question you on who, when, oil change was done and since there is no back up to it, how do you justify that we know what were doing when we change oil and that they cant blame it on us.

The reason i towed it home was because it was sunday and all dealers were closed. When i found out that the oil was leaking through the seal of the oil filter, i unscrewed it and seemed like the gaskit was a little worn. I then tightened it back completely and added oil ( i thought by just adding oil, i could back to normal and everything will be fine. didnt think of engine already damaged and all)

Warranty coverage is going to be hard to get on this one. Auto insurance usually do not cover bad workmanship. Its insurance of the business which did the work that cover that. One way or another its not going to be easy.

of course they will especially if breakdown is related to lubrication or lack thereof. But its easy to figure out if somebody butchered oil change. Thats why Toyota has their Eng. :)

I probably would have done the same thing. Just being an armchair quarterback now. It's different when it's happening to you.

On the other hand, you have documentation that you took reasonable steps to avoid further damage (tow bill). Some pictures of the oily mess under the hood, and documentation that the dealer changed the oil, and you might have a case.

Alot of half empty glasses here. Just keep your glass half full and hope for the best. Maybe you can get several thousand more miles out of it than trade on something newer. Good luck.

It will be hard now for you to prove they caused the problem. Having it towed straight to a dealership would have been best.
