I recently bought a 01 Tacoma with the 3.4 V6 (automatic trans). It has the TRD Prerunner package and has 4 doors. I bought it from a friend who was the original owner and took good care of the truck. It has 186,000 miles. I live in San Francisco and don't get very many chances to open up the throttle, so it took awhile before I actually got an open freeway. Early one morning I punched it and made sure the intake and headers still sounded nice and rolled on in to work. As I opened the door I could smell something that reminded me of the smell my clutch made when I bought my first Camaro (97') and was getting the feel of driving my first manual transmission. Anyone got any ideas of what it might be? Just to be sure I hauled ass again the next chance I got and got the same smell.

You are very possibly smelling the brake pads. They smell similar to a hot clutch when the brakes get hot.

check that the ebrake bellcranks [pivots] are not seized.

common for these to seize and rear shoes rub forever, making stinkytimes
