How to swap ECU/ECM

Just got done doing a full rebuild. Along the way the computer fried. I've got a replacement computer from another taco and am getting ready to install it. Any tips?

The one thing you need to be sure of is that the computer from the donor truck is identical. Both trucks need to have the same engine and transmission if you want it to be a plug and play type. Even then you might find a few issues. Good luck and let us know what happens.

 

Hey BamaToy, thanks for your responses and help on my last thread.

To bring you up to speed: Did a full rebuild, now my engine cranks beautifully but gets no spark.

As of right now I have two of the same computers pulled from mechanically identical trucks. I did the swap following the procedure outlined in the 1996 FSM (My truck is a 98, but Its mostly the same minus the ignition...which is what I can not get to work haha) As of right now the truck is still in a no spark situation.

The weather is wet, and the truck has been sitting for a long while so I am hoping dry conditions help.

That being said, I do not think a bad computer was the problem

Otherwise i'm going to start checking for shorts between the computer and sensors/ignition components. This is a bit hit or miss as I am doing this relatively blind (No relevant FSM pertaining to distributor less ignition and Haynes Chilton are worthless past simple things).

 

Have you checked for codes? A simple test for codes can help a LOT. You may find an important codes stored that can lead you in the right direction.
