I'm looking to buy a first gen, and want to remove the lock right that is currently in it. Do I need to re-set the backlash and other parts within the 3rd member? or is it simply remove the 3rd memeber, remove the lock right and re-install without the lock right?

If you are exchanging the entire third member, you won't need to set up anything. If you are replacing the locker in the third member with another carrier assembly, then yes, you will need to set preload and backlash.

Define "remove lockriright"? Lockright replaces spider gears so if you remove lockright you will have to install spider gears with washers correctly installed. otherwise spider dears will chatter.
You are better of finding open diff and swappign that and selling lockright diff.
