So has anyone replaced a clutch on a 4.0 ?

So has anyone done a clutch replacement on a 4wd 4.0 ?

 

been looking into this myself. Found a few threads on here using google. Was a really good write up by a guy with an X Runner. Haven't seen anything 4wd specific but I would guess it would be almost the same (minus the part where you have to jack up the truck... since us 4wd folks have more clearance )

You going with a stock replacement? I have been looking at the URD stage 3 or 3+ for mine (I offroad a fair bit... mmmm burning clutch smell!... and figure a beefier clutch wouldn't hurt. And the stock clutch is so soft that a little bit more stiffness on the pedal wouldn't bother me)

 

Nah I've read reviews on clutches on here n x runner forums they said if you don't race the truck or have an x runner don't consider any competition clutches or any of that for a 4wd you'll burn it up way faster but has anyone had the urd throwout bearing kit installed ? They said that was better than factory no more chirp

 

My shop has replaced several clutches on 2nd gen trucks. Is there something specific you want to know?

 

Is it a pain in the ass to do ? From a mechanics point of view ?

 

It is not difficult at all as long as you have the proper tools. In a shop environment I have a full lift, and air tools, which make the job a simple one. Normal clutch replacement here in a 4wd is about 3 hours. Longer if you don't have the air tools or a full lift, but still something you could tackle on a Saturday.

I've done it twice in my tacoma. The hardest part about it is getting to the top bolts of the transmision. My father in law has a super long socket extension (~3 feet) where I was able to get to the bolts from the back end of the transmision.

 

Love my 3 foot socket extension! Can't really do quick transmission repairs without it.
