dude that sucks the second gens can be removed so easily!

my truck(not sure if its all first gens) you have to unbolt the tailgate from the hinge. Thats the only way to get it off.

On my 2000., it was just as easy to remove as the newer Tacomas.

Well my tailgate would take at least two more seconds to remove because it has the wiring for the backup camera attached to it. Then again that would make it all the more worth stealing. I was looking at those clamps at wal~mart the other day and almost bought some. I cant remember why I didn't, but I will be getting some tomorrow.

No its not. On the passenger side, the tailgate hinge is open on the underside allowing it to pop right out like I showed in the vid.

I was thinking something similar except I was planning on using a small piece of rubber from a bicycle inner tube.

There is plenty of clearance for the clamp to not hit any painted surface. With the addition of a rubber peice, it MAY start to interfer as the diameter has been increased. If useing something to "insulate" the clamp, keep in mind that that could possibly give some "wiggle room" to any would be theive to get past the clamp and take your tailgate. If the clamp is fully tigtend, it wont move on the hing so it wont hurt the paint. If it leaves a small scratch and you are worried about rust, then hit the area with a shot of some rust inhibitor spray paint.

No problem, Man! I saw that there was no write up, and as easy as it is to do, a 1:30 vid covered it very well. no reason people shouldnt do this unless they have a locking tailgate, cover, or shell.
