Thank You for posting this tip here ... Although my ghetto Walmart did not have these, The local Advance auto had something similar. I was wondering how to secure it from getting stolen.

Thanks for the tip. I installed the camp and feel a bit better about leaving the truck parked in public places.

I was thinking though, a would be thief only needs a screwdriver and and extra 60 seconds or so to get the clamp off, so I went a bit further and installed it with the screw slot positioned down. (facing the tail gate) In this position it's not possible to get a screwdriver on it, and it would be very difficult to work it off with pliers. I installed it with a small open end wrench.

I installed mine today as well. Used an Autocraft "Key" Clamp. Only took 10 mins. Peace of mind for $3.99.

found a clamp in my dads garage, put it on with the nut facing downwards to further deter a theif. only took me 5 mins to put on, definitely worth it considering a new tailgate is a few bills! next im gunna see about locking the tailgate chains too. great write up!!

Ya I only had normal ones too last year so I welded beads and messed it up so it can't be backed out. Works great I think. Even took it a step further getting stainless clamps and the welds are a mess everywhere lol

Just a few expensive & DIY things...
Add me to the list too, $3.20 OTD for two clamps and one safe(er) tailgate.
now to figure out what to do with the other clamp...

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
did you just add the washer on the OEM screw? how much threading did you loose? I think I'll add this to spare myself the possibility of a body mod by an angry-would-be-thief.

Just did both of these today. I thought I bought two 1/2" washers but they were actually 3/8" when I got them home and realized it. Still worked awesome. Put the washers on both sides (didn't lose that much thread) as well as the "easy twist" detachable handle hose clamp on the right side. Removed the clamp handle with no problem and am planning to lock it in my newly lockable modded console tomorrow after I do that project. ;) So now I've got a factory tailgate standard lock, a hose clamp and two washers to keep someone from stealing it. Between all 4, it'll take em' a while to get it, and require some tools so it's a time consuming deterrent at least.

Autozone's clamp $2.99 for two (wrapped in black duct tape) :

You can see the washer and the Easy clamp with the butterfly key still attached.
