Greetings Fellow Taco Heads, My 06 Tacoma just reached the 70k mile mark. I was starting to hear what I thought was the brake pad sensor rubbing against the rotors telling me to replace the pads. However, upon inspection I found both the inner and outer pads on both wheels had 8mm of thickness left on them (minimum thickness is 1.5mm per the Haynes manual). I can't believe there is that much brake pad material left after 70k miles! I understand that alot of my breaking is assisted by the engine when down shifting and this may be the reason there is so much pad material left. So I wanted to find out from our Toyota community how many miles before your first break job?:D

I went 60k... Replaced with oem pads and rotors from the dealer.. Found it to be pretty neat you don't need tools to remove pads.

looked at mine last weekend and at 65k they still have plenty of life left in them. I wouldnt be surprised if I made it to 100k before replacing

It all depends on highway or city miles.

I've got only 38k on my '07. Last inspection, they said the front is great but the rear needs replacement. I use the transmission a lot for slowing down. I always have on my Toyota vehicles.

I have never heard of replacing the rear shoes before the front pads so I'm concerned. Regardless, I just had delivered yesterday new ceramic front pads and new rear shoes. I'm going to replace them all this weekend when I put on the wheel spacers.

Anyone else have to replace rears first? Thoughts on why when the fronts are about 80% of your braking? Stumped.....

Cut & broke off some stuff.
127,xxx and still haven't changed them.
Had a shop "clean & adjust" and flush new fluid in the spring but the pads still have some life left.

I replaced mine around 35,000. I still had life on them, but they where getting low, and I was taking a trip at the time, so I just changed em. A lot of hills around here so I think affects mine a lot. I got pads from Toyota, not just for life, but I like that they don't put out a ton of dust. When I got the new pads, the parts guy at the dealer was surprised I got that many miles with life left. I told him how I heard people where getting into a hundred thousand with original pads (read on here) and he didn't believe me.

My '94 T100 had 130k miles on it when I sold it. The original pads were nowhere near needing replacing. It has a lot to do with the kind of miles (highway vs city) and how you use engine braking.

Not on my Toyota (20k), but my old Chevy Colorado needed rears at about 50k. Never replaced the fronts and traded it at 80k.

Found out the GDMF shop that my wife took the truck to for inspection LIED! They said the rear brakes needed to be replaced. The shoes are within 1/16th inch of the new ones! This is obviously one of those shops that tries to take advantage of women. BASTARDS! Well, I have my next set of shoes and pads already bought and paid for.... Wagner PosiQuiet shoes and the same for the pads but in Ceramic.

It really all depends on the driving conditions. I put 102k on my first 05 tacoma I bought new and never put brakes in it. According to the service records my current truck had them done around 100k, and the last 05 I had needed brakes at 60k. The last 2 trucks are autos and the first was a manual but truck # 2 was primarily city driven. The first and current trucks were mostly rural driving and highway miles. That said I've wasted a set of pads in a day at the track doing driver's schools. But obviously not in one of my trucks.
