TRD package? Rear end gears?
I went back 10 pages and didn't find anything on this. I have a TRD package, but nothing in the manual says what this includes. Can anybody tell me?
I test drove several Tacomas before buying mine. Mine is the only one with the TRD package. On the highway in 5th gear, my tach reads 2500 rpm @60 mph. Seems like a '97 Taco I drove was showing 2150 @ 60, same size tires, same engine and tranny, 139K miles, no TRD package. Maybe I'm remembering wrong. Does anyone know whether the TRD package includes lower gears in the diffs? The guy with the 97 (4wd) boasted a measured 25mpg highway. That's good for a 4X4. Maybe because of higher diff gears?

i dont know anything about the 1st gen TRD options but i dont think hte 2nd get TRD has different gear rations so i doubt the 1st gen does. However, like i said, i'm not at all familiar with the TRD on the 1st gen, maybe someone else can shed some more light on the subject.

I think I remembered wrong. My 00 gets 65mph @ 2525 or close and the other got 60 @ about 2150 or so, so I figure they must be geared the same. My 00 has a glasspack muffler, so I guess it just sounds like the engine is at a higer rpm. I need a new muffler. Too loud inside for driving any distance at all.

there is a code on your door tag that will tell you what gears you have.... example is my 96 taco has 3.58 gears and most not all trd taco's have 4.10's and some lucky sob's got 4.56's if they got a 4cyl auto pre runner trd lol
THIS CHART IS FOR '95.5-04 MODELS ONLY! The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows: First digit: A = 7.5" ring gear B = 8" ring gear Next two digits: 01 = 3:42 02 = 3:58 03 = 4:10 04 = 4:56 05 = 3:15 06 = 3:91 07 = 4.30 Last digit: A = 2 Pinion, Open B = 4 Pinion, Open C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.

In layman's terms, the TRD package came with a locking rear diff. and those cool looking stickers in the side of your bed.

Good info, TacoZilla. So, my door jamb sticker says:
RZN171L - CRMOKAB C/TR 056/FJ40 A/TM B07A/ W59 Printed just like that. I guess that means I have an 8" ring gear with 4.30 gears, 2 pinion, open. That right? If so, no wonder it does so well with 31X10.50s. I might even get better hiway gas mileage with 33s! No real need for the limited slip with that electric locker. Can you interpret the rest of the numbers for me, or point me to a site where I can check it out? How about for VINs?

yeah only other code i see i recognize is the w59 wich tells me you have a manual...with 4.30's that thing must rock lol...as for MPG if you went to a 33/10.50 you probably would pick up some but not much due to the rolling resistance and they weigh more...not much but still more for the truck to turn

Good deal. Thanks again for the good info.
Well, it's just too bad I'm here in PA rather than in Farmington, NM, where I was a few years ago. I'm having a hard time finding anywhere to use my 4wd for anything fun. In Farmington I could really put the truck through some fun trails. I still have a 54 Willys CJ3B stored in Farmington. Trying to sell it if anyone's interested.

Hey thenrie, there are a couple of places in Ohio, ie.Fireball Truck Night and Yankee Lake. I've been to the later of the Two. Big time redneck stuff, but hey, mud is mud right. They opened a three mile trail a lil while back.
Do a search for Yankee Lake Truck Night or Fireball Truck Night. Both sites have pics, videos, directions, etc...

Hey, Great! Thanks for the tips. I'll look those places up and see what I can do. I'm in Wexford, just north of Pittsburgh, and I just moved here, so I don't know anything about the area. Hope to get into some hunting and fishing, maybe this spring, once I get real settled in.

Thenrie, go to the video forum. I posted a video called "mud run". That was at Yankee Lake in August......day b4 they opened the offroad trail.

That looks like fun! Any rock climbing on the trail, or is it all mud?

I havn't been on the trail yet, but I think it's mostly mud, hill climbs, tight turns, and some water crossings. They have an open free for all mud area that is a blast. $2 pounders and fair style food....it's a lot of fun
