Clutch is a piece of crap

I have a 2011 tacoma reg cab 4x4 2.7 with 28k miles and the clutch has started slipping . I bought the truck wrecked so no warranty .Never expected to have to replace clutch this soon. I am now looking for the best replacement.Anyone have any suggestions ?

I don't see a clutch for a tacoma on the site.

 

URD has some good looking clutches. Going to replace mine with one of theirs whenever it goes....

 

Not to be rude, but its pretty hard to wreck a clutch in 30k miles. Either you or the previous owner were not using the clutch corectly.

 

I think there is a tsb out. Mine old 4 banger started slipping around 22k. I traded it, but I brought it in twice, they found nothing.....

If I remember correctly, they had two cluthes made, one was from japan, and it was the good one, the other was made somewhere else and it is the one that is covered. Search the 4 banger thread.

 

I can't speak for the previous owner but I have driven manual trans vehicles all my life and I know how to use a clutch. As posted above Toyota used some junk clutches from Mexico in some of the tacomas and they don't last long.

Now that you have jogged my memory, yes this was an issue. Not sure exactly what years it affected. I believe one clutch was an Aisin (generally regarded as the better of the two OEM clutches) and Luk (the one people seem to have the most issues with).

 

tr1977, this is a well known problem on the 5 speeds. T-SB-0066-11 was issued June 28, 2011 to address the matter and covers the 2005 to 2011s.

Unless you have abused the clutch, there is a problem with the parts. Toyota used two vendors: Luk from Japan and and Aisin from Mexico for their clutches. As your vehicle rolled down the assembly line you might have got the POS Luk pulled from the box of clutches at the moment or the good Aisin, or a mix of the two. It appears that in almost 100% of the cases the problem is with the Luk clutch. And, there is nothing in the VIN that tells which clutch you got.

I am ruling out a leaky rear main seal as it is does not appear as one of the common cause.

The fix is to replace the entire clutch set and flywheel. The technicians are supposed to inspect the pressure plate and disk and throw it away parts if they have the Luk logo and replace the clutch components only with AISIN parts.

Yours is only going to get worse for you.

I have a new Aisin clutch disc , pressure plate and bearings .I planned on resurfacing the flywheel. The dealership wanted $1300 for parts and labor.I bought the parts for $300 and have a reputable mechanic to install for around $500. Hope this is the last of my problems for awhile.
