I have a 2004 tacoma that I bought new and has been great.

Recently I had an oil leak between the engine and transmission. (2 weeks ago)

My mechanic first changed valve cover gaskets. Helped some. ( I had tightened the originals down at 170,000 mi.

Next he replaced the oil pan gasket. Then it still leaked at the rear of the engine.

After dye test and letting it run, it was determined to be the oil cam plugs on the rear of the engine.

He replaced them and I just got the truck back today. I still see a little oil, but it may be residual from the repair etc. that hasn't dripped off. I'm gonna give it a day or 2 to see if it has stopped completely.

I've always used 5w30 oil. And after 100,000 mi. Started using 5 QT. Oil and 1 QT. Lucas oil stabilizer.

I'm in south florida. Will a thicker oil help if I continue with some leakage or is it best to stay with 5w30. If so what viscosity?

    2 days later. 11/29/13
It is still leaking now (guessing it is the rear main seal)
I put a diaper on it to keep the driveway clean.
It not leaking too bad. May just keep driving it for now.
What is the typical labor ($ or hours) for pulling the auto transmission and replacing the rear main seal? Thanks

That looks like a bad oil leak. How often do you have to add oil?

I think the leak is slowly stopping.

I change the oil to 10w40 5 qts.
1/2 QT bars leak rear main seal stop leak
    1/2 QT lucas oil stabilizer

I haven't added any oil since this last post. I change the engine diaper once and it has a small oil stain on it.

I'll check back with results. The bars leak may be working as it conditions the seal??? Knock on wood:)

I think that the bars leak rear main sealer and the Lucas is working. I haven't added any oil since the first post. Still knocking on wood:)
5 qts of 10w 40, 1/2 QT lucas oil stabilizer, 1/2 QT bars leak rear main sealer.
