Cut & broke off some stuff.
Just wondering if the rear brake shoes will make noise when they wear down the way front pads do. Or do I have to open it up and look at the shoes periodically to know when to change them?

If you hear noise it's a good time to inspect them. Most times it is just excess brake dust and you can clean them with brake cleaner. If you notice a severe sound you might be down to the rivets and that's not good.
