in a 2014 Tacoma SR5 I would like to install an "always alive" outlet so I can charge my cell phone overnight. I can't find a power source without tearing into harnesses to look for one. Has anyone done this? Please tell me the source of power.

You should use a fuse, conduit and grommets; otherwise, if you burn up your vehicle the insurance company will not pay for it. Their inspectors are very good at finding reasons to deneigh your claim if you have a vehicle fire caused by electric wiring. If you need a constant voltage, DC to DC Converter can be used to regulate the voltage and disconnect it when it gets to low.

I found that I could push an upholstery needle (about 10 inches long) through the grommet around the big wire bundle that penetrates the firewall. The bundle is on the driver's side and the hood release cable goes through the same grommet. I threaded a piece of wire through the needle and tightly spiral wrapped the other end around a piece of no. 16 wire. I taped it to improve the grip and was able to pull the wire through the grommet and now I can use the battery as a power source and locate my receptacle in some convenient place.
    Thanks for your help.

Just put a fuse within about 12 inches of the battery.

simply remove the relay that controls the 12v sockets and put a jumper between the two main pins in the socket where the relay went. (using a piece of wire and two male spade connectors)

    Pins 3 and 5.

Boom instant always on 12v power to your sockets. No having to poke holes through gromets, splice into wires etc... and you can go back to 100% stock if you want. Getting to that relay though is a pain as its behind the fuse pannel inside the truck .

No extra wires. Fully fused. I have done mine and a few for others.

If it's the same layout as a 11 and 12 you need to pull the scuff plate, foot rest, kick plate, lower dash panel, lower reinforcement, unplug a few of the connectors in the maine body ecu. Remove 3 ( I believe) bolts lower the ecu/ fuse block and rotate. You will need to verify which relay it is in the back of the unit and remove and install jumper. Not a terribly hard job, just tedious. Make sure batt is disconnected. If your not sure you can do it. Don't try. Don't force connectors.
You break something you could be talking big bucks to repair.
