Is there anything bad about grounding an LED device near the device itself (i.e. in the bed area) and then running the power from a relay in the engine bay? Should I run the ground all the way back to the engine bay? Does it matter?

No need to run the ground all the way from the battery with that light of a current, grind a little paint off the frame and mount with a small ring lug, or find an existing ground location and just use that.
