This seat is Fu@ked up... (write up)

2005, 4x4, sr5, v6 6speed. Looks like it was used on some ranch trails. 75K miles

So Iv had this taco for a week and my back is messed up worse now. I tried moving the lumbar adjustment and it laughed at me. I had to drive the truck for 4 hours the other day and decided enough was enough, I ain't got no money for this BS so I'm fixin it one way or another.


When I sit in it, My L1-4 just sank right in. So here is my seat fixin' write up, if you don't like it, then change the channel.


We start with the two bolts in the front 14mm





then these two in the back





lift up the front and disconnect the two plugs (the ground on my black plug is missing must be seat belt warning?)




Then take the seat out and into the shop




take off these metal ring staples underneath (I cut them and replaced them later)









lift up the flap in the back and more staple rings







now we can jimmie up the front cloth a little





look bout 3 inches up in front, more staple rings





now we can start to shimmy up the material more and see whats up with this farking seat

 

back to the back and now we see how this works. the lumbar roller acts like opposing throttle cables and pulls apart these side cables. That puts more tension on the springs in the middle. The tension brings them forward and makes them stiffer theirby supporting your lower back.


as you can see, my springs are busted. Looks like some fatass fukun cow been sittin in this seat. Mann those springs are strong too, I couldn't even bend them with channel locks







so I cut those springs out with bolt cutters, you can see where they left marks. and then it gets interesting.





The lowest bar on the front just above the bottom foam looks like it will jab you in the tail bone when the shoddy thin foam wears out.

 

better get a milk crate for your new seat

 

My phone is being craptastic and taking forever to upload the pics

 

So I needed something to replace the springs. Something with resistance, something to hold the tension when I roll the cables but still a bit bouncy even under load.


Searching in the boxes of crap that is basically trash, but I cant let myself throw away, I found this stuff. used oil filter O-rings, hauled out bunjee cords, this phone line (who the eff even uses that), some zip ties, and this piece of off brand viscoelastic foam from the mattress topper that was a king size but my bed is queen so I cut it down with my lightsabre.

 

I started by shoving in the foam piece, it didn't really fit because it was too much, but I kept shoving it in and made it fit.



I hated the way the middle of the seat was so deep, and the sides made my lats and shoulders roll forward. this otta fix that.









then I used the preowned oilfilter O-rings by tying them from one cable to the other. and I put a piece of phone cord down the spine to replace the broken plastic tubing

 

That right their is a squarknot, learnded that in cub scouts





those are the adjuster cables im holding out the way

 

put it back together in reverse order and get approval from friend







Earlier, I said hey you house winch Im hungray. so by the time I was finished here, some delicious tacos appeared in my kitchen










I ate them, and I will poop the rest out in the morning.

Thanks. I sat in it and made vroom vroom noises. but I didn't drive it yet. it adjusted, the lumbar roller worked and It was supportive. the seat was more flat in front like it was wider, so it felt like I was sitting on it instead of sinking into it.


We will see how long it holds up.


best part----------- FREEEEEE seeing how I used stuff I already had and some people would have thrown that junk away! cost about 2 hours of time from seat out to seat back in.

 

took it to work today, mannnnnnnnn what a difference. not just because of the broken springs, but the shape of the seat is much better for me.

seats are not a one size fits all. I think everyone needs a somewhat "custom" seat or a milk crate if you building a soap box derby

 

Nice mod...............did you just go with zipties to replace all the staple rings you cut out?

Yes, I have used the same zipties on all sorts of stuff. (they are the pricey nylon ones) i dont imagine them lasting as long as a steel staple, but inside the seat, the weather and sun wont be tearing them up either.

 

Well, put a few tanks of gas thru the truck, and the "new" seat is quite comfortable. I would say I got my money worth out of this mod.

 

update, 30k miles later, its still great
