NGK, Denso mix explanation

So I was at the dealership to pick up some spark plugs and the parts guy was an older gentleman who said he's been working for toyota for 30 some odd years.

I asked him about the "mystery" of two types of plugs in the 2nd gen tacomas.

His explanation was that Denso is toyota's primary spark plug manufacturer and that NGK is their secondary manufacturer. They do this to avoid putting all their eggs in one basket.

In order to preserve the relationship with their secondary manufacturer, they have to purchase a certain amount of plugs from them and that's why one side of our motors has NGK plugs from the factory while the other has Denso.

It's the most plausible explanation I've heard so far.

 

If this were the case, why not just use all of one brand in some vehicles and the other brand in other vehicles?

Seems like a reasonable explanation though.

Ha! I asked the same thing and he didn't have an answer for that one.

He said he maybe it was an assembly line thing where drivers side heads went down one line and passenger side heads down another but he really didn't know.

 

That one's easy....
