I ordered a 2015 Tacoma back in the beginning of October, hoping to get it first week in December.

I am a manual transmission only guy.

That is why I settled on the Tacoma. I am concerned about some bad things I have read lately about the 6-speed. What are the issues with the 6-speed? I plan to tow often with this truck and off road, trailing snowmobile trailers on lakes. Should I be worried about the manual?

Welcome to the club! Don't be worried. It's notchy as hell but works just fine. I did 2 things to mine and they definately helped. 1 - I adjusted the clutch pedal to have it grab a bit lower. Yeah it's a hydraulic clutch and you'll hear everyone tell you it's not adjustable but look under the dash and you'll see a threaded rod and 2 adjusting nuts. 2 - Change the tranny lube to Redline MT-90.
It takes time, but the tranny will become a little less notchy over a few thousand miles.

Any idea if Toyota fixed the throw out bearing before 2015? You would think if this has been an issue, they would fix it like with that after market URD unit.

No problems with my '15. It is definitely notchy the first 1000 or so miles but I'm at 1600 now and it is damn smooth. Maybe I'm just getting used to it haha

Hey op, I'll offer the best advice, buy what you want and like. I own a manual and love it. No problems. Manuals and autos both have strengths and weaknesses. Believe me, I know autos. A lifetime career working on them. The Tacoma auto is a good one, by auto standards but so is the manual. Look at past threads on this site, it won't be hard to find the goods, and bads with both. Enjoy your new truck.

The manual in my WRX is REALLY notchy. I have to double clutch it to get it to down shift into 2nd and first is a pain. When I drove a 2010 Tacoma manual, I considered that to be like butter, compared to my WRX.

I absolutely love shifting gears in a manual. I consider driving an automatic a soulless experience. I would NEVER own an automatic.

How are these with towing? I also want to tow my car 1968 AMX to the race track and on trips to AMC meets in other states.

Only problem I've had with mine in the 25k miles I've owned it (second owner) is the throw out bearing going at 70k. I replaced it with the URD one and after the break-in period it's been it's been smooth since. I've also heard many people do the URD or TRD short shift kit in conjunction with the URD throw out bearing to make shifting a bit smoother/more precise. Still debating if I want to shell out for the TRD SS kit...

I've towed a 25' baha, a polaris ranger and a utility trailer with about 4000lbs. No problems. I was pleasantly surprised, actually. Plenty of torque.

Are you talking about a 25' Baja boat? That had to be really heavy, like 6,000 lbs+. Especially if it had a cabin with water tanks.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/314957-350-000-miles.html

He's got probably close to 400,000 miles on his. I don't *think* read in there where he had any issues with the tranny, but I could be wrong as I'm going from memory.

(that's not to discount other people's problems as I know there have been some)

I say go for it. I personally wanted a manual, but it would have had to be ordered and then it wouldn't have had all the options I wanted (because they said you can't get those things in a manual).

Yes. Tanks were empty though. Believe me, I knew it was back there but the truck managed better than I would have thought. The 1/2 ton crew cab GM 4x4's tow rating is about the same.

I tried Redline, Roal Purple, and Mobil1 syn in my 05 6spd and IMO Mobil1 worked the best. Smooth from day 1. Great truck, seemed to have more pep than my 2014 auto but worse MPG on the hwy. Squeaky pedals at 10K was my only problem. Toyota replaced the entire assembly and was good till the day I sold it

I will read up on that thread.

I had to order mine, because it is so hard to find a manual transmission, and I wanted the off road package to tow snowmobiles to boondock areas where we like to go riding. I am waiting 8 weeks for mine to arrive! Ordered October 10th.

Any thoughts on undercoating? I am going to spray mine with this Fluid Film stuff when it arrives.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Sounds like your WRX is due for some new synchros. I have that same problem in my 97 Powerstroke, downshifting into 4th or 2nd gear is tricky.
