was going 50 on cruise then engaged clutch, shifted out of gear to coast up to red light. then reached up to the wiper once function accidently hit resume on the cruise. rpms almost hit 6000 before I hit the brakes to cancel the cruise. this was scary. shouldn't the truck/computer know I am not in gear?

There is no sensor to tell if you are in gear, out of gear, or which gear you are in. The ones for the last 20 years or more work off an speed reading instead of engine vacuum which is what lets you set a speed and hold it no matter what gear you are in. It receives a signal to cancel the cruise from the brake light switch, clutch switch or stalk switch. It would have hit the rev limiter and not blown the engine. It might even shut off when it did hit the rev limiter, try it again and let me know about that, I'm curious :)

Cruise didn't almost blow your engine.... You almost did by hitting the cruise button out gear.

    Merry Christmas!
