first of all this is not my truck, i found this video on you tube after countless hours of searching the net and this site for a good sound clip of the noise. anyone else have a 4.0 v6 that sounds like this? it has been intermittent over the past few months. im not talking about the infamous toyota tick but the metallic knocking sound you can hear from the left side of the engine in his video. my truck is doing this occasionally , there is no CEL or codes, and no performance issues, the truck runs as strong as the day it was new. ive never missed an oil change , it gets premium gas always and full synthetic shell platinum oil every 8000 kms. toyota oil filters and new denso spark plugs at recomended intervals.

Yup, I get the same intermittent knocking. Seems only to occur at idle, in park.

I first noticed it about 120,000 km ago (at ~213k now). I too keep regular oil changes and change out factory spark plugs at recommended intervals, with OEM parts. I use 87 octane gas.

Truck hasn't skipped a beat yet (knocking on wood), despite the knock. Not really concerned about it, but I am curious about what causes the sound.

I may stop at a dealer one day to see if they will have a listen and give me there opinion , but last time I was at the dealership it wasn't doing it lol.
I don't get any pining or bad noises on acceleration iether , throttle response is sharp and no hesitation. mine is only noticeable at idle in park also and can't be heard from inside. I'm at 190000 kms , but I too would really like to know what makes that noise

I have metallic noise between 1500-2500 when pressing gas. Some noise at idle but not as loud as video. Toyota tech said it was normal. He told me run 10w-30 oil.

I've heard this noise in my 2014 and although it's a bit disconcerting, I do believe it is normal.

I have the same noise as well. Started hearing it more when my engine had around 120,000 miles on it. Just like others have said, I here it more when the truck is in park and warmed up. Guess its normal...

Found this on another forum , thought I would share it , maybe when the weather straightens out here I'll drive it like a race car and see if it goes away , never thought my truck would have carbon build up lol

I've seen this on a caddy once. Oil changes regularly, babied acceleration, dealer couldn't figure out what was happening with a knocking sound in the engine. Turns out this phenomenon was known to GM about the Northstar. Carbon would build up in the combustion chamber when driven very gently and could cause a knocking/tapping noise as the top of the carbon build up on the piston just barely contacted the bottom of the head. The remedy: Drive it like you stole it for 15 minutes. Carbon burned away, sound was gone.

The Chevy 5.3 V8 had the same problem in the early 2000s. We had a lot of complaints, but no engine failures that I can remember. I had the noise on my Taco about a week ago, but right now it's gone. I'm thinking carbon build up might be the culprit.

That's interesting , I'm thinking that also, I do believe you need to "drive it like you stole it " once in awhile to clean it out , but it's way to slick around here right now lol I Just finished the 192000 km service , and the noise seems to be a lot quieter almost gone again ,, for now anyway

My 2014 only has 7k on it and sounds like this sometimes so I guess it's just a noisy engine

    improved toyota goodness.
same noise here...did the ''drive it like you stole it'' treatment work? ie; lose/lessen the noise?

    few things here and there.
Late to the party.. if anyone sees this response, do y’all still drive the same truck? If so, was the problem ever discovered?

my 13 with 134k does the same thing. Doesn’t seem to be a problem, but hey.. never hurts to know why it happens.

OP's video is normal sound, mine has sounded like that almost since it was new.
Your's sounds almost like the fan hitting the shroud or something, have you checked your water pump for play?

No, mine was the compressor actually coming apart internally. When I took it out to assess it it just fell apart.

I have a 2017 3rd Tacoma TRD Sport with 40,000 and this is the noise I have been experiencing for the past year. I have changed brand of oil,(Mobile 1 to Pennzoil) and changed the oil weight from 0w-20 to 5w-30 with no improvement. I took it to the local dealer here and it was determined that the vacuum pump was going out; replaced under warranty. For a couple of months I did not notice any noise other than the normal ticking but the knocking/clanking started again. Like many of you I only notice the noise when at idle/park. I am not experiencing any loss of power, acceleration, or hesitation. The truck is performing as if I just took it off the lot; except the noise. I am not sure if driving it like you stole will have any effect but what the heck - who doesn't like mashing the gas pedal?

May be pinging. My truck prefers 89 and higher test. Most will swear I’m crazy and it’s all in my head, but it’s not. Mine audibly pings on 87. Runs fine but doesn’t sound fine. After I started running mid and higher grade gas it’s back to sounding like a normal engine
