just a generic answer from a old style shade tree mechanic

are you sure it is the gauge ?

don't know if it is mechanical or electrical, but the sensor is usually down by the thermostat. (guessing electrical)(close to the block and the top radiator hose)
is there any reading at all or just stuck at the peg?
you could look at the wiring by the thermostat and see if any frayed wires/connectors. and check your fuse block for a bad fuse

in the older toyotas ( 72,3,4 celica) they had several things not listed like fuel pump fuse so you would go crazy trying to de-bug the wiring when a problem happened
there really isn't much to go wrong with the temp gauge

on the sender unit think if you have a VOM you could could unplug the sender and measure from the sender to ground on the block and see what the resistance is. then put in the sender and fire up and let the engine get warm, shut down and check the resistance again and it should have changed ! if not, either no water or it is faulty .
so that would narrow it down to the gauge or the wiring/power
