I have a 2014 and untill my water temp rises up into the operating range. After the 2 minute high idle warmup it has a pulsing ticking thumping whatever sound till it warms up this pulse speeds up if I give it gas and raise rpms . Just wondering how "normal" this is before I leave my truck overnight so they can crank it just to tell me it's normal. He'll maybe it is . I can't describe the noise so I guess my question is are these trucks noisy when cold valves , Piston slap etc....thanks

The only real way anyone on here could offer effective advice is to hear it happening. Perhaps you can take a cell-phone video and post it up for us? Otherwise we can come up with a million different possibilities from "That is normal" to "Holy crap your engine is about to blow up!" lol.

Yeah I know, I'm gonna try to record it in the morning , I guess for the most part I was wondering if others have have engines that are more noisy when cold and sound smoother once warmed up

Agreed I've never heard one without a tick or something just wondering if it's normal to be more noisy when cold and smoother once warmed up I'll try to get a video

Not my video but this is almost the exact same noise, he schould have went a little longer once the rpm slows down a little the noise slows down and is a little more distinct but notice it didn't sound like a knock or tick but more electrical or pump driven

I think basically you can hear more coming from an aluminum head than an old cast iron.

My 2013 is the same. Reminds me of an old tractor we had on the farm. Sounds like I stacked a dozen Hoover vacuums on top of that old Belarus tractor. I was afraid it would be even louder when I added my Volant CIA + scoop. Thankfully there's no added noise.

Got my truck last month with 7100 miles on it. It had the sound when I test drove it too. It's just a loud little motor. I took the engine cover off for the intake and it seems a bit louder. I reckon there was some dampening material on the underside of the cover.

Does the noise on your truck stop once it's warmed up

Tundra, Tacoma, first thru third gens all are stupid loud on cold start up. I've noticed it for 15 years. It is what Toyota designed. That fan clutch is the biggest contributed to the noise. I hate it too, but it hurts nothing but your ears.

I live in Canada and during 8 months of the year everyday is a cold start for my 2015 taco...

I have the same noise as well at start up and doesn't go away until the temp dial gets a couple clicks above the "C". It's just how the engine operates on cold start, it did bother me for a while and if there's a quick fix I will definitely do it, but I don't think there is anything specifically wrong. I'm sure toyota has thought of cold weather when designing the tacoma, they get the crap beat out of them by the cold here and still last forever :)

I'm not sure, as I'm usually in the cab listening to music at highway speeds. It doesn't bother me. I bought a pickup, not a Bimmer :)

I have somekind of smog pump that seems to be loud as hell on start up for about 30 seconds then all is good.

Maybe someone could chime in on that sound and maybe confirm if I am even close.

Well your truck definently puts it through the cold weather test, I feel better that mine isn't the only one that does this , to tell you the truth I wasn't that worried about untill I got on this sight and saw where a guy had the same noise and went to toyota and they replaced his motor then other stuff then replaced the oil pump and it stopped. But the oil pump parts have been the same part number since 05 so I don't know what really fixed his . Either way I haven't heard of a taco motor failing due to faulty oil pump unless yall have
