Tacoma remote filter
As much as a pain in the butt that the Taco oil filters are to remove, has anyone used a kit to mount it in a sensible location?

WHAT? You must have a 1st generation Taco or something? I've seen a relocation/extension mod mentioned on TW. You'll have to dig it up. Cheers

There's a mention of a AMSOIL remote oil filter in one of the posts. Try to google it.

Yes. I know Hayden also makes one, like $60 plus the hoses. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with such a kit and were there and problems using one. Also trying to find one that would use the stock filter as I was able to get 24 of them at BJ's (Fram) for $1 each. I assume you must increase the amount of oil in the pan but not sure of this. I also see that Toyo finally wised up and put the newer ones in a place where you don't spill 1/2 a quart taking it off nor do you need to be a contortionist to actually get to it. |

No need to assume, you will have to increase the lube content to compensate for the additional run the oil has to work through the hoses and adapters. However, you must be careful if and when the oil drains back into the pan that it does not exceed your maximum oil fill point. If I were you, I’ll fill the additional runs with oil before I start the engine. You can gravity feed through one hose and keep the engine oil cap open for air displacement. Discuss it with a pro before you tackle it yourself. I personally would never do something like this because every threaded connection you add will be a potential leak point over time. You may be inconvenienced 3-4 times a year for filter replacement but keeping the new run dry may pose a problem, I'd guess as the truck ages. Good Luck.

Check with TW member "Banshee". His dad has a similar setup on his 1st gen Tacoma. Cheers

I did see that post. I'm not 100% sold on the idea mainly because of the leak issue. I can see myself on a back road, -10F, 2 feet of snow already on the ground and a oil hose breaks. But then again it is December 16th, I've only snowboarded two days due to lack of snow and it was 52 here today. |

I have the 4 banger and went with a K&N because of the 1 inch nut on the filter. makes it real easy to get off. I also went with a larger filter a PN 2009 to get a little more oil in the system. Ive had remote kits before and can say I didn't really see a benefit just more things to break and leak.

By-pass-oil-filter
I have this type of by pass oil filter and it works great . The big oil filter works slowly so it can filter the oil much better the small one filter the oil as a regular filter does . I can take some pictures and post them so you can see were it is .Beleive me it keeps my engine clean inside and at the same time it cleans my oil .
About leaks no problem if one of the hoses break down all you do is put the filter were its suppose to go and no problem , but i have not had any problems with leaks and the hosses are made for that.I recomend that u fill the big oil filter before installing it's really a do it your self project. Also this will add about 2 qts. to your truck.Check out amsoil web page and look for oil filters in the cars section and the part# is bm k-13 |

What about the longevity of the oil pump, realistically we are talking 200,000-300,000 miles on these engines, that's a concern I would want to ask a mech or a pro who has torn down and rebuilt a taco to see the condition of said oil pump. Would the extra oil and distance and effort shorten the lifespan of the pump.

Well, I can tell you that at 2,000 hrs, the oil pump on the 0 540 may have had 50 hrs. left on it.
There was an A D out on it. |

Based on experience my toyota 4x4 1988 pick-up has 200,000 miles on it and only changed the timming belt (chain) once witch is recomended by toyota every 100,000 miles and if you change it they recomend to change the water pump and the oil pump as once |

It took me awile but I got the 700 mls. on the BMW R100R.
All fluids were changed. Now I need not think of it for 15,000 mls.; which is longer than I will live. I am never going to see another TBO. |
