Converting 2WD to 4X4

I have a 2WD 2000 PreRunner that I bought in Texas. I'm currently stationed in CT where it snows most of the year, so 4WD would be great. My truck is in great condition, and I don't want to get rid of it. Is there any way to convert it to 4WD? Basically, I need to know if the 2WD PreRunner is the same as the 4WD PreRunner with the exception of the front axle and other 4WD gear. I realize this would be alot of work, but I'm willing to do it if I can. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm very good at turning wrenches, but I could always use some more experience. I can generally figure out almost any situation. I'd give myself a 7 or 8 out of 10. I do not, however, have a donor vehicle. I was planning on finding one at a junk yard and taking what I needed off it. Hopefully one that had been rear-ended.

 

if you're doing it, it would also be a perfect time to sas if that is in your plans... you can get a right hand T case cheaper than a left hand, and passenger drop axles are easy to come by

 

I might sound stupid, but what are the benefits of a straight axle swap? My experience with vehicles is lacking in some areas, this is one of them. You've all given me some very exceptional information, and I really do appreciate it. I wasn't expecting this much help. Thanks guys!

 

A guy at work did the same thing to his 98 4-runner. He worked on it probably 12-14 hours each weekend. Took him 6 weeks. He restores trucks as a hobby & has a full set-up in his garage. He has some sweet rides!!

It probably cost him $1500 in parts. I know he was always calling around trying to get crap. Some of the parts would not work. I'm not sure how motivated he was towards the end.

IMO you could sell yours & for not too much more get a 4X4. I just sold my 95Taco extended cab, V-6, 3" lift & locker for $8,500 two years ago. 140K miles

Trading in the truck is definately not something I want to do, it'd be a shame to let it go. Aside from some very minor body damage and normal wear and tear she's in extremely great shape. Plenty of power, decent gas milage, and she's paid off. If I was in warmer weather, I probably wouldn't worry about it, but after four winters in the Northeast I really want the 4WD. Too many times I've had to shovel my way out of a driveway. Frankly, it's embarrassing. At the same time, I'm trying to save money to buy land and a house when I get out of the Navy. I need to keep my expenses on the sane side. In short, I want 4WD, but I don't want to lose a great truck, and I don't want to lose too much money, either. I figure if I put $5-7 grand into this truck I'm saving myself over 10 grand because I'm not buying another truck. From what most of you have said, that's definately feasible. I do feel like this is a little over my head to do alone, though, like I said before, my experience is a little limited. The links and videos you've given me are very helpful, though. Thank you very much for those. One question still stands, what are the benefits to SAS? Sorry for the long response, I just wanted to put out more information so that everyone knows my situation better. Again, thank you all for all the great information!

 

I understand if you want to keep your truck but I wouldn't think it cost 7-8 grand on top of what you get for your truck to get a comparable 4x4 one.

 

I would say keep your truck and buy a 2nd vehicle with 4wd. I have come accross some Suzuki Sami for $2500, blazers for $3000, and F-150 for $4000 all with 4wd. I have even seen cheaper vehicles with 4wd. They may not look as good as your taco but you only have to drive it some of the time. This way you are not going through the headach of adding 4wd to your truck and taking apart another truck for parts.

 

Yep I would think it would not be worth doing it. Its just going to cost you way too much money, time, and a lot of headaches. Just go out and buy a good used 4x4.
